AVC NOTEBOOK: AVC GOES FOR BIGGER TITLE.

With Saturday's victory over Barstow, the Marauders achieved that goal, clinching its first conference title in four seasons. Now, they have another.

coach Newton Chelette said Monday after learning his team (28-6 overall) received the third seed in the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Regional playoffs, which begin this weekend.

Ranked third in Southern California and sixth in the state, AVC opens up first-round play Saturday at 7 p.m. against visiting Pasadena, a team that received an at-large berth after winning just 13 games this season.

``This is the third season for us,'' Chelette said. ``We played preconference and conference. Now, it's the postseason. We're re-directing our goals.''

Being seeded third is significant for a number of reasons. For one, it shows AVC earned the respect of its counterparts - only top-seeded L.A. City and Ventura earned higher seeds.

Second, AVC assured itself of at least three home games. Provided the Marauders win each of them, they'll be off to the State Final Eight tournament at Jenny Craig Pavilion Jenny Craig Pavilion, built in 2000, is a 5,100 seat, multi-purpose arena in San Diego, California, named after the weight-loss entrepreneur Jenny Craig. ``When you're on top of the mountain everyone wants to knock you off,'' said senior guard Sidney Melvin, who leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game.

At first glance, it appears the Marauders drew some favorable matchups in a bracket that features just one team, Oxnard, with more than 21 victories.

With a victory in the opener, AVC would play the winner of Irvine Valley-Santa Monica, and both teams finished out of the running in its respective conferences.

Beyond that, only sixth-seeded Oxnard looms, and its first-round opponent is a College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. A third-round matchup against Oxnard would be intriguing because the Condors handed AVC one of its six losses this season. Chelette hasn't forgotten the 75-68 setback on Dec. 27.

``The best team didn't win that game,'' he said. ``No doubt in my mind, the best team didn't win that game.

``We're cautiously confident. We're not going to overlook anyone at this point of the season. We understand what it's about and we're going to come out and try to take care of business.''

Perhaps there's no hotter team than the Foothill Conference-champion Marauders (24-9, 16-0), winners of a school-record 16 consecutive games. That doesn't bode bode 1
