AVC NOTEBOOK: AVC'S ORTIZ A PRANKSTER BUT NO FOOL SOFTBALL STANDOUT'S JOKE IS ON COACH.

Byline: Sean Ceglinsky Staff Writer

Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  coach Gene Pagliaro was greeted Monday by his star softball player, Tami Ortiz, returning from spring break on a pair of crutches.

In his 15th year, Pagliaro had good reason to be concerned about the future of his team, which went undefeated in the first half of Foothill Conference play (7-0) thanks in part to the efforts of Ortiz.

Fortunately, for Pagliaro and AVC (1) (Advanced Video Coding) The video compression techniques used in the H.264 standard, jointly developed by ISO and the ITU-T. See H.264.

``Oh man, I was getting equipment ready for practice and then I looked over and saw Tami. And all I could think about was how I didn't go to church on Sunday and now God was punishing me,'' Pagliaro said jokingly. ``You always worry about the girls during spring break and most of the time someone comes back with a sunburn sunburn, inflammation of the skin caused by actinic rays from the sun or artificial sources. Moderate exposure to ultraviolet radiation is followed by a red blush, but severe exposure may result in blisters, pain, and constitutional symptoms.  but nothing major. I have to give them credit, they did a good job of setting me up for this one.''

So was the coaching staff, which had the players go through their standard 2-hour, 15-minute session with the focus on hitting.

Pitching coach Kevin Tatlinger had the players work off tees and followed with live hitting. Each Marauder MARAUDER.  Pagliaro, the extra work was to make sure the team was focused.

``It was nice to see the girls come back sharp,'' Pagliaro said. ``You're always afraid they'll lose something over vacation, but they're a hard-working group. I'm pleased.''

AVC resumes conference play today against last-place Mt. San Jacinto San Jacinto, river, c.130 mi (210 km) long, rising in SE Texas as the West Fork and flowing S to Galveston Bay. Its chief tributary is Buffalo Bayou, and both the bayou and the lower river are used for the Houston ship channel.  followed by this weekend's Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  tournament, which the Marauders have won the past three years.

--Only time will tell: Monica Tatlinger has learned plenty about resilience this season. The freshman has endured playing with a protective cast over her left arm for six weeks, and as a result, her role has been limited.

Frustrated by being unable to play her normal outfield position, Tatlinger has contributed with her bat and speed. Her 24 hits and 21 runs scored rank among the best on the team.

``Monica is a competitor,'' AVC athletic trainer An athletic trainer is an allied (non-physician) health care provider capable of performing immediate and emergency injury management, injury assessment, and rehabilitation.  and assistant coach Elliot Siler said. ``But if we don't get that cast off soon, she'll rip it off with her teeth.''

Tatlinger is scheduled to go in for her weekly check-up Thursday, and if the injury is healing properly, the cast could be removed as soon as next week.

``If she has any more X-rays, she'll glow in the dark,'' Siler said. ``But really, it comes down to her health. No matter how bad we want her to play or she wants to play, she has to be healthy. If it takes another week or two that's what will have to be done.''

--Hoop-la: Though its season ended more than a month ago in the first round of the state playoffs, the men's basketball team continues to practice in an effort to make it back to the postseason.

``We have a good group of kids here,'' coach Newton Chelette said. ``We're getting ready for spring and summer ball, so we're working hard every day.''

AVC returns eight players from last year, most notably All-Foothill Conference selection Sidney Melvin. The 6-foot-3 guard was second on the team in scoring (16 points per game) and steals (44) and first in free-throw percentage (78 percent), 3-point percentage (37 percent) and blocks (15).

Among the other returnees are Tarius Baker, Idel Dawson, Colin Darfour, Anthony Gamboa, Chris Ford, Teddy Myers and Elvis Rivera.

And it appears Chelette is once again getting some of the region's top athletes to stay close to home and play at AVC. Brandon Murray (Rosamond), Olie Bradley (Antelope Valley) and Michael Webb (Lancaster) could be seen working out Monday as well as former AVC standout Bo Segeberg, who redshirted last season at Montana State.
