AVC LOOKS STRONG FOR POSTSEASON\Marauders will face Moorpark in 1st game of regional playoffs.

Byline: Kathy Orton Special to the Daily News

The Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  men's basketball team knew it would come.

There was very little doubt on the part of the coaches, the players or the fans when the season began that the Marauders would advance to postseason play.

Even when Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
struggled in the preseason, the team's confidence never wavered. A Foothill Conference title was expected; so was a top seeding in the playoffs.

The Marauders, back-to-back conference champions, received the No. 6 seed in the Community College Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  regional playoffs, and will face Moorpark on Saturday at Antelope Valley College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The game is being broadcast on KAVL-AM (610) and tape-delayed on KAV-TV (Channel 3).

Early season losses to Ventura, Mira Costa and Sequoias probably cost Antelope Valley (24-6) a higher seed, but coach Newton Chelette isn't too disappointed with the playoff brackets.

"I would like to be No. 1 (seed)," Chelette said.

Ventura (27-2), the defending state champion, was given that honor. The No. 2 seed went to Mira Costa (24-3), while Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries.  (27-3) and Riverside (29-5) were seeded No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

The Marauders share the same bracket as the Corsairs, but they wouldn't meet until the third round.

The Antelope Valley team that will take the court Saturday against Moorpark hardly resembles the one that had to go into overtime to defeat the Raiders 83-82 at the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. "We're totally different," Chelette said. "We're not different X's and O's-wise, but we have better execution. People understand their roles a lot better and are getting used to playing those roles."

But perhaps the biggest change from December is the faces on the court. Three freshmen have emerged as key players for the Marauders.

Mike Hamelin, who stepped in for the injured Marlon Tisdel, has flourished in his starting role. The 6-foot-1-inch freshman point guard averages 5.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game. George's career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds were crucial to Antelope Valley's first conference victory against Barstow. Murray finished atop the Foothill Conference-Northern Division field goal percentage standings at 64 percent.

"I knew that Mike and John were very, very talented," Chelette said. "I was going to have to find them minutes. But Shaun Murray was a pleasant surprise. I knew he would be good, but I didn't think he would develop as fast as he has. Since the first conference game at Barstow, his confidence has grown immensely as has my confidence in him."

Antelope Valley last faced Moorpark in the playoffs in 1990. The Raiders upset the Marauders 85-76 that year.

Moorpark (15-16) finished third in the Western State Conference-Northern Division behind Ventura and Cuesta cuesta (kwĕs`tə), asymmetric ridge characterized by a short, steep escarpment on one side, and a long, gentle slope on the other. The Raiders are led by cousins Tim and Wendell Nunnery. Tim averages 19.9 points per game, while Wendell adds 15.8 points per game.

"Moorpark will probably, as they've done all year, play zone (defense)," Chelette said. "They'll try to control the tempo. I don't think they'll want to come here and try to run with us."

Around the rim: Chelette said Murray is doubtful about Saturday's game after the 6-8 freshman center sustained a severely sprained ankle A sprained ankle, also known as a ankle sprain, ankle injury or ankle ligament injury, is a common medical condition where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn.  in practice Monday.
