AVC FOOTBALL; STILL DRY IN DESERT FOR AVC; MARAUDERS BITTEN BY ROADRUNNERS.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

The seemingly limitless curse that follows Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  to this desert hideaway spooked the Marauders again Saturday.

Maybe it's just an urban legend Myths about anything and everything that barely have a shred of truth in them, yet seem to take on a persistent life of their own. Before the Internet, such urban folklore as "alligators in New York City sewers" was carried in magazines and newspapers. , but it's hard to dispute the claim College of the Desert is a field of screams "Field of Screams" is the 19th episode of season eight of the television sitcom Married... with Children. Make no mistake about it, the Roadrunners earned their 21-6 victory Saturday night, but long before the final whistle, the momentum gathered by the Marauders was mysteriously halted.

trailing 7-0 early in the second quarter, the Marauders' most impressive drive of the game, kept alive by a fourth-and-1 conversion, reached the Desert 3-yard line.

But on the fourth down carry by running back Kasey Young that gave the Marauders a first-and-goal, Roadrunners defensive back Anthony Munoz was injured.

The early diagnosis on Munoz was a neck stinger stinger Sports medicine A popular term for an injury to the brachial plexus due to abnormal stretching , but for precautionary reasons he wasn't moved while an ambulance was summoned.

Meanwhile, the Marauders waited. And waited. And waited. The delay was approximately 30 minutes.

``It was almost like we had a second halftime,'' Desert coach Steve Dostal said.

Marauders coach Brent Carder downplayed the lull while Munoz was attended to.

``(The Roadrunners players) were sitting around there just as we were,'' Carder said.

When play resumed however, it was the Marauders, who haven't won at COD since 1984, who self-destructed.

Quarterback Monte Gutowski handed off to Nick Olivares, who pounded into the left side of the line. The ball was poked away, and Kai Kanekoa recovered the fumble.

``(The delay) didn't hurt them,'' Carder said.

Game, set, match. The Roadrunners increased the lead to 13-0 in the third quarter, cashing in following another lost fumble. It was 21-0 before AVC got on the board.

``We were trying to concentrate, to stay focused. We ran the play and it was a fumble,'' said Gutowski, who threw three interceptions, one of which was returned for a Desert touchdown in the first quarter.

``This loss is on me,'' Gutowski said.

Others might just refer to the site as AVC's demise.

Teacher knows best: In what has become a pattern when the Marauders and Roadrunners meet in Palm Desert, the pupil beats the teacher.

Tenth-year COD coach Dostal played for and spent five seasons as an assistant under Carder at AVC. He's 6-4 facing the Marauders. Saturday's win avenged two consecutive road losses to AVC by a combined score of 66-6.

``I always feel bad,'' Dostal said when asked about the significance of beating the Marauders. ``I know he's been there for a long time.

``I asked Brent once what's the hardest thing about being a head coach. I expected him to say the recruiting or something like that. He said the worst part is having to lose.''

: With just 47 players on the current roster, injuries could wipe out the Marauders.

The lack of depth on the offensive line was evident Saturday. When left guard Steve Maher limped off the field, he was replaced by defensive lineman Chris Castillo.
