AVC FOOTBALL: THESE PLAYERS COULD FIND STEADY JOBS AT AVC.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

Like the old Oakland Old Oakland is a historic district in downtown Oakland, California, located on the northwest side of Broadway, between the City Center complex and the Jack London Square district, and across Broadway from Chinatown.

Raiders, Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
College's football team is sort of a safety net for renegades, castoffs and others who for one reason or another don't fit in elsewhere.

Glancing at the current roster, these examples come to mind:

Running back K.C. Young, a 5-10, 265-pound bulldozer from Mojave who was the MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  of the first High Desert All-Star Game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games  in 1996, has surfaced after returning early from Grambling last year.

Kicker David Aranzubia has won a spot after losing his senior season at Antelope Valley High for disciplinary reasons.

Eight-man stars Shannon Byrne (defensive back) of Antelope Valley Christian and Travis Alkire (tight end) of Bethel Christian are both projected starters who were unwanted elsewhere due to eight-man's stigma.

Defensive back Sal Iabichella, a 200-yards-per-game tailback at Paraclete two years ago before quitting midway through his senior season, is a top newcomer.

Returning linebacker Gary Hardy would be playing major college football if his early-high school academic performance at Antelope Valley hadn't permanently sabotaged a scholarship.

Defensive lineman Eugene Dawson is making a comeback after graduating from Littlerock High four years ago.

Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  coach Brent Carder (29th season) isn't complaining. The above are all impact players, as the Marauders look to improve on 1997's second-place finish Noun 1. second-place finish - a finish in second place (as in a race)

``Potentially, those guys are pretty good,'' Carder said.

The coach said running back is his deepest position, pointing to Young and returners Jan Brown Janet (Jan) Corinne Brown (born June 22, 1947 in Nanaimo, British Columbia) is a former Canadian politician of Croatian descent. She was first elected as a Member of Parliament under the Reform Party of Canada ticket in the Alberta riding of Calgary Southeast in the 1993 federal  and Tyree Booker.

``K.C. Young just needs to work himself back into shape because he's been out two years,'' Carder said, ``but he's a good recruit.''

Brown and Booker are both 5-9 and 200. ``They're very similar,'' Carder said. ``Booker is a very intelligent back who can block and really handle himself physically. Jan is also solid and a good receiver.''

Carder really likes Alkire and Byrne.

``Alkire has been a real pleasant surprise,'' he said. ``He's got excellent hands and good speed.''

Byrne had two interceptions as a freshman nickel back and figures to have more responsibility this year.

Iabichella, just 5-7, 165, has won a spot at defensive back.

``He's very good with great quickness,'' Carder said.

The offensive line is a strength, bolstered by returners Bryant Perez (6-2, 285) and Ray Candalaria (6-2, 280). Perez switches from guard to center.

Justin Holtfreter (5-10, 195) and Monte Gutowski (5-10, 205) are competing at quarterback.

``I've been very pleased with both of them,'' Carder said. ``They're both stocky, physical guys, and knowledgeable. Since they're so similar, it's a lot easier when we switch from one to the other.''

Four prospects at wide receiver - Andre Velasquez (6-1, 150), Rodney Gillins (6-2, 190), Kevin Dolphin (6-3, 205), and Tom Gilpin (6-0, 185) - give the quarterbacks plenty of options. USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  transfer Velasquez and Gillins have good speed, Dolphin redshirted last year, and Gilpin is a possession-type.

Jason Boyett (6-5, 215) and Alkire are the tight ends.

Defensively, linemen Ashor Valibaba (5-9, 230) and Chris Castillo (5-10, 230) both bench press 400 pounds, and Carder is impressed with Dawson.

Hardy (5-11, 210) and James Juneau (5-11, 220) are the top inside linebackers. Ian Savage (6-2, 220) and Gabe Reyes (6-0, 200) are the projected outside starters.
