The Antelope Valley
College-College of the Canyons football rivalry is back.

Not convinced?

Saturday's game, which for 59 minutes was a sloppy, turnover- and penalty-dominated contest, turned into a cliffhanger cliff·hang·er

It was reminiscent of the rivalry's heyday in the 1970s before Canyons disbanded its program 17 years ago.

The schools split six meetings between 1973-80. Canyons' 28-0 victory over the Marauders in 1974 is perhaps the most significant game of the seven most significant encounters between the two. That loss was the only blemish blem·ish

on AVC coach Brent Carder's 10-1 team that captured the school's second state championship.

Twenty-four years later, Carder is still directing the Marauders and had his hands full with this new pack of Cougars, now led by coach Chuck Lyon. ``(The rivalry) was big for this reason: Back in the '70s we used to play in the summer passing league down there,'' Carder said.

When Canyons decided to field a team again, it didn't take long for the two schools, which compete in different conferences, to find an opening on the schedule.

``It's a (home-and-home) series. We'll play there next year,'' said Wanda Gallerson, AVC's dean of student affairs Student affairs staff are responsible for academic advising and support services delivery at colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. The chief student affairs officer at a college or university often reports directly to the chief executive of the institution. . ``As long as our conference schedules would work out, we'd like to meet every year. . . . It would be a great way to start our school year.''

Gallerson and Carder, also his school's athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic , cited the relatively short distance between the two campuses. The 40-mile trip is shorter than for any of the Marauders' Foothill Conference opponents. ``While (the Cougars) are the closest school from where we are, we're not the closest school to them,'' Carder said.

But Lyon wants to continue the series, particularly after watching his team - which beat Desert in its return to the field the previous Saturday - turn the ball over four times and collect 103 penalty yards. ``You always want to play somebody that beats you,'' Lyon said.

Indeed, the visiting side of the field was well-populated.

The turnstile count and the win was certainly a coup for Carder, though the Marauders also finished with almost identical numbers to the Cougars in turnovers (four) and penalty yards (99).

And the final minute provided the fans with enough excitement to maybe activate a rivalry dormant for so many autumns.

``It's kind of a natural. The proximity between the schools; our (area) high schools usually play against teams from (the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  area). Our players get to know them from that,'' Carder said. ``If the schedule would work out, it would be good for both teams (to meet each season).''
