officials said they needed to do more work to build up community support for the bond measure before proceeding.

``We can get the resources together to do it well once,'' said AVC spokesman Steve Standerfer. ``Bond issues are a tough sell here. We want to ensure ourselves of success.''

Board member Steve Buffalo said he believes the college needs to do more work spelling out specifically to the community what facilities the bond would help fund.

``I thought we were pushing it a little too fast,'' Buffalo said. ``I don't think March had any advantage over November.''

AVC trustees voted unanimously on Nov. 19 to put the bond measure before voters in March, saying the money is needed to update the aging Lancaster campus and to start the proposed Palmdale campus. College officials are seeking bond funding to supplement state revenue that officials hope to get toward 35 projects, totaling $368.5 million, to accommodate rapidly increasing enrollment.

College district enrollment is expected to double to more than 26,000 students by 2020. College officials said Lancaster facilities are aging, and the campus lacks lab, library and office space.

The college also needs about 500 parking spaces.

The bond issue would help establish a Palmdale campus at an initial cost of about $38 million, including $16.2 million in locally raised revenue.

The Palmdale campus would be part of the 540-acre College Park housing development proposed south of Barrel Springs Road between 37th and 47th treets east.
