AVC BEAT: NEXT UP: FAMILIAR FACES : SOUTHWESTERN, CHAFFEY AWAIT.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

There won't be any surprises, no fear of the unknown come Friday night at Marauder MARAUDER. One who, while employed in the army as a soldier, commits a larceny or robbery in the neighborhood of the camp, or while wandering away from the army. Merl. Repert. h.t.  Gym.

That's when four basketball teams that know each other very well meet in a Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  regional playoff doubleheader.

Then at 7:30 p.m., the Marauders men entertain Chaffey.

Both games are rematches of earlier season meetings with mixed results for the Marauders.

AVC's men, seeded 13th, have fought numerous battles with Foothill Conference intradivision rival Chaffey through the years. However, none of the 10 all-time losses to the Panthers hurt more than the Jan. 6 meeting at Marauder Gym.

stormed out to a 52-34 halftime lead but Chaffey chipped away, sending the game into overtime before pulling out a 98-96 win.

``We just lost our focus that night,'' AVC sophomore center Le'Tre Kelly said of that first Chaffey game. ``Maybe Chaffey thinks they'll have the same kind of game and an easy win against us.''

That's doubtful. The Marauders (17-14) are one of Southern California's hottest commodities right now, having gone 8-0 in Foothill Conference North play to win a fifth straight league crown.

AVC had its share of frustrations during its nonconference schedule. A handful of players left the team for various non-basketball related issues, with the biggest loss being freshman power forward Jeronne Saxton.

Saxton, a father of two, returned in time for conference play and AVC rode its renewed energy to a high seed considering its doldrums doldrums (dŏl`drəmz) or equatorial belt of calms, area around the earth centered slightly north of the equator between the two belts of trade winds.  of December and early January.

``We did have a lot of adversity early in the season. It took us a while for all of us to start playing together,'' freshman post player Norman Floyd said. ``It's like an (Antelope Valley-area) all-star team here. We just had to wait for a while until everything clicked.''

That moment might have been in its Foothill Conference opener, when lowly Barstow pushed the Marauders to overtime before AVC pulled out an 85-83 win that sparked its eight-game win streak to close the regular season.

``Considering all the problems and losses we had in preseason we got a good draw,'' said Chelette, whose team played a brutal schedule and was rewarded despite owning few quality wins.

``This is the first time I can remember going to a seeding meeting without us having a win over any 20-win teams,'' Chelette said.

By contrast, the Marauders' women reached the 20-win mark for the first time since 1992. At 20-11, AVC earned a No. 14 seed.

One of those 20 victories came at the expense of Friday's opponent, Southwestern. AVC blew out the San Diego-area school 96-78 at the Foothill-Pacific Coast Challenge at Chaffey on Dec. 5.

Marauders coach Jackie Lott called that win ``our breakout game.''

It also gives AVC the edge in confidence for the rematch REMATCH Cardiology Clinical trials–Randomized Evaluation of Mechanical Assistance Therapy as an alternative in Congestive Heart failure–related to use of a portable, electric left ventricular-assist system–LVAS–eg, HeartMate® .

``It could go either way,'' Lott said regarding her team's potential advantages over the Apaches. ``I think familiarity is huge at this time of the year. We've seen this team three times already. We played them once and scouted them twice. We know what we have to prepare for.''

Injury report: The Marauders will have to prepare for the postseason without sophomore center Davia Shannon, their leading rebounder and third-leading scorer.
