``We shot terribly from the 3-point line for whatever reason,'' Chambers said. ``I'm just disappointed that we didn't have one of our better games. But when you get to the championship there is only one team that comes out a winner.''

Marauders' coach Newton Chelette, one of Chambers' closest friends in the coaching fraternity, knows all about heartbreak at the state tournament. AVC's trip to the final eight in 1997, the school's first appearance in 33 years, ended with a one-point upset loss to West Valley.

``I felt really bad for him because they came so far and to not win it is very tough,'' Chelette said. ``You don't get that opportunity very often.''

Chambers has made two trips to the state tournament in 29 seasons at Mt. San Jacinto.

Chelette helped out his old buddy in preparation, providing scouting reports on semifinal opponent Long Beach, which beat AVC twice.

``That was a special team he had this year,'' said Chelette, whose Marauders lost 102-86 to Mt. San Jacinto in January.

Basketball's best: It could be a preview of AVC's incoming freshmen class when Marauder Gym hosts the High Desert Basketball Coaches' Association All-Star game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games  for Antelope Valley-area seniors on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Among the participants are Littlerock's Tony Mayes, a 6-foot-8 center who is expected to play at AVC, according to according to

Brady Chelette will most likely play for his father at AVC next season.

``I think it's a great idea,'' Chelette said of the inaugural game.

Rosamond coach Tim Atkerson, the association's president, is coordinating the event, which splits the area's schools in half to form a Blue team and Gold team.

``Tim Atkerson is really the driving force behind this game,'' Chelette said. ``Every (school's) kids are going to benefit from it.''

Women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges. : AVC sophomore forward Ebony Davis, the Marauders' leading scorer and second-leading rebounder this season, scored four points for the South team in a California all-star game held during the state tournament last week in Irvine.

Alumni report: Kristal Nessa, who continued AVC's strong tradition in the classroom, is making a mark on the field at the Division I level.

Nessa is a junior outfielder at Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:

The Mustangs' starting center fielder, Nessa was tied for second in the Big West Conference with 27 hits through Sunday's games.

Nessa had two hits and one run scored in the second game in a Cal Poly doubleheader sweep of St. Mary's on March 6.

Add alumni: Despite averaging 16.4 points per game, Nevada junior John Burrell John Buster Burrell (born November 22, 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas) was an American football wide receiver in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Washington Redskins. He played college football for Rice University.  was only named to the honorable mention category for the Big West's postseason men's basketball honors.

A Highland High product who was a two-year starter at AVC, Burrell finished his Division I debut season leading Nevada in several categories, including points, field goal attempts (13.7 per game), field goals made (5.3) and minutes played (31.1). Burrell surpassed the 20-point mark 11 times, highlighted by a career-high 34 against North Texas.

Baseball: The Marauders, 2-17 overall, battled back from a controversial 12-11 loss last Tuesday to Victor Valley and defeated the Rams 10-9 on Thursday at Victorville.

The previous game was called in the seventh inning because of darkness despite protests from AVC coach Joe Watts.
