AVC BEAT: LIMPING TO THE FINISH.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

Davia Shannon might not be playing when her Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. , the Marauders could use Shannon, who has signed with Cal State Fullerton, in tonight's home game against Rio Hondo and Friday's regular-season finale against fourth-place San Bernardino San Bernardino, city, United States

out and do this,' '' Lott said. ``Of course it's unfortunate when you lose a (6-foot-4) kid. She's a big part of our team.''

But the Marauders (19-10 overall) have played without Shannon before. Averaging 13 points and 11 rebounds, Shannon has missed four games, three with an ankle injury in December and a 73-50 loss at San Bernardino on Jan. 23 while caring for her ill daughter.

The Marauders' focus could swing to their guards Alicia Parra, Camina Stevenson and Erica Yazzie, all of whom have stepped up the offensive end after AVC leaned on Shannon and fellow post player Ebony Davis early in the season.

Over the last 16 games, while AVC was posting a 13-3 record, Yazzie and Stevenson have led the Marauders in scoring 10 of those games.

But in back-to-back road losses to Rio Hondo (72-56 on Jan. 21) and San Bernardino AVC didn't get much backcourt support.

The guards will have to step up for the rematches that will determine AVC's bid for a conference title.

``We'll have to get some balanced scoring from everyone,'' Lott said. ``In the past experiences we've had without Davia, Tina Tharp (17 points and eight rebounds last Wednesday at Cerro Coso) has come up big and she'll get a lot of playing time again.''

Men's basketball: Like the women's team, AVC also ends its regular season against the best competition in the Marauders' conference.

At 6-0 in Foothill Conference North play, the Marauders (15-14) can wrap up their fifth consecutive league crown with a win at second-place Desert tonight in a 7 p.m. game in Palm Desert.

AVC held off the Roadrunners 79-75 at Marauder Gym on Jan. 30, a key victory during a late-season surge that has the Marauders in position to host a first-round game in the regional playoffs.

The regular-season finale is against Cerro Coso at Marauder Gym.

Softball: AVC went just 1-3 at the Cypress tournament last weekend, losing 4-0 to Utah Valley College in the early morning hours on Sunday. The Marauders had to come right back a few hours later and were eliminated 7-2 by Golden West.

AVC coach Gene Pagliaro expected a tough assignment at the tournament with several perennial powers participating.

The Marauders, who made their 1999 home debut on Tuesday against Moorpark, play at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  today and at Santa Barbara on Friday. Both games start at 3 p.m.

Summer girl: Freshman Summer Sanchez will serve as primarily a utility infielder and a relief pitcher for the Marauders.

But Pagliaro has big plans for the versatile Sanchez, even if it's not on an everyday basis.

``This girl was one of the finest athletes in the (Antelope) Valley,'' Pagliaro said of Sanchez, a Rosamond High product. ``We'll be using her as a pitcher and third baseman and she'll play some outfield for us. Summer is the ultimate utility player.''
