The school was first founded in Ontario in 1883, when city founders and brothers George and William Chaffey donated land and established an endowment for a private college.

But after losing last week in the final quarter and by one point the week before, the Panthers sit at the bottom of the conference standings.

The Panthers had a 22-0 lead over San Bernardino San Bernardino, city, United States

on Saturday before turning the ball over and allowing it to score 29 unanswered points. ``We let them back in. We made mistakes. It's been that way the last three weeks,'' Chaffey coach Carl Beach said. ``I showed the team their capability and potential but this is the result.''

Beach said his team has not showed the maturity to win games although on paper they look like the conference's top team. ``We're playing well statistically. But stats are for egos,'' Beach said. ``The win-loss record is a team effort. Our effort needs to step up.''

The team's leading rusher, Dameon Hunter, missed Saturday's game and is doubtful to play this week. He leads the conference in yards per game with 147. In three games he has 443 yards and five touchdowns.

Defensively Chaffey is doing well considering the team's lack of experience. ``We are playing good run defense,'' Beach said. ``We area young team in terms of experience. I have no starters from last year back on defense.''

The Panthers defense is second in the league with the No. 1 run defense. AVC is expected to continue to run but has had good numbers in the air.

``They have two quarterbacks that are real competitive. They can put the ball down the field,'' Beach said. ``They have three or four real good weapons.''

Receiving team: Wide receiverAndre Velasquez led the team last year in all-purpose yards as a freshman.

This year he has 118 yards receiving, including 76 yards from Saturday's game against College of the Desert. He had a 36-yard touchdown pass from Justin Holtfreter.

Carder was pleased with Holtfreter's performance this week despite his two interceptions. ``I thought he did well. But I'm not happy with anyone when you lose. His two interceptions were not dumb DEAF, DUMB, AND BLIND. A man born deaf, dumb, and blind, is considered an idiot. (q.v.) 1 Bl. Com. 304; F. N. B. 233; 2 Bouv. Inst. n. 2111.

interceptions. The defensive back made a great play.''

Carder said the passing numbers are a result of the team's being behind late in the game and trying to catch up. ``When you're down, you're throwing the ball. We were not doing it throughout the ball game.''

But Carder said he is sticking with the running offense. ``When you run the football, you control the football,'' he said.

: After not letting opponents score in the fourth quarter in its first three games, the AVC defense gave up two scores in the last quarter, including a 25-yard pass to put the game away for COD.

``We had a chance to get back in the game,'' Carder said. ``We had a chance to put points up early. We were in scoring territory and didn't get it done.''

Salas had 190 yards rushing and a 24-yard touchdown run.

``College of the Desert just beat us,'' Carder said. ``They ran the ball at us. Salas is a real good running back.''

Salas remains the No. 2 running back in the Foothill Conference, ahead of AVC's Anderson, after he lost the No. 2 spot a week ago. COD is the top rushing offense in the conference averaging 250 yards a game.

``The biggest thing is we aren't tackling well,'' Carder said. ``The running backs were running hard. They had a big line. They did what they had to do to beat us.''
