AVATAR ANNOUNCES MACMAINFRAME FOR NOVELL'S NETWARE SAA AND APPLE'S

SNA PS GATEWAYS; MACMAINFRAME 3270 BECOMING THE UNIVERSAL SNA CLIENT
HOPKINTON, Mass., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Avatar Corporation today announced its MacMainFrame 3270 terminal emulation software for the Macintosh will now function as a client to Novell's NetWare for SAA(R) communications server and Apple Computer's SNA ps(R)gateway. These new product introductions further round out the company's product strategy for providing Macintosh-to-IBM mainframe connectivity over as many network configurations, network protocols, and host access methods as possible. Earlier this year the company announced new software packages for providing Macintosh-to-mainframe connectivity over TCP/IP and DECnet networks.
"Because of its advanced functionality and ease of use, the MacMainFrame user interface has become the industry leader in Macintosh- to-IBM mainframe connectivity," explains Richard Sterry, vice president of marketing for Avatar Corp. "We are trying to bring MacMainFrame to users in as many network environments as possible. By providing support for Novell and Apple SNA gateways, we now offer customers the most options for Mac-to-mainframe connectivity available in today's marketplace."
MacMainFrame 3270 supports all of the traditional SNA connectivity methods such as Coax, Token-Ring and SDLC. It also supports all of the most popular network protocols including TN3270, DECnet, and AppleTalk and a number of the industry's leading SNA gateways including IBM's OS/2 gateway and Avatar's own MacMainFrame and Netway gateways.
"During 1992, Avatar has unveiled the most comprehensive Mac-to- mainframe line on the market today," states Cindy Santisario, senior research analyst with International Data Corporation. "DCA, Novell, and Apple all offer parts of the solution, but if a user is looking for one single user interface across connection platforms, MacMainFrame is the solution." MacMainFrame for NetWare SAA
MacMainFrame for NetWare SAA is a software product which allows Macintoshes on an AppleTalk network to access host sessions via Novell's NetWare SAA communications server. The user interface is exactly the same as the industry standard MacMainFrame 3270 version 5.0. When the user launches MacMainFrame for NetWare SAA and requests a new host session, the choices for gateway connections now will include Novell's NetWare SAA communications server. Once the host connection is made, the MacMainFrame application is the same as all other MacMainFrame products.
"MacMainFrame 3270 in conjunction with NetWare for SAA gives our customers using Macintosh workstations easy access to IBM host data," explains Gerry Machi, vice president and general manager of Novell's NetWare Systems Group, Sunnyvale, Calif. "Avatar's solution is a great example of how companies can leverage the NetWare for SAA platform and build connectivity products for NetWare customers who have IBM mainframes attached to their networks." Optional MacMainFrame Software
MacMainFrame for NetWare SAA users can also take advantage of Avatar's MacMainFrame Graphics software which allows host graphics to be manipulated locally on a Macintosh. MacMainFrame Graphics emulates IBM 3179G and 3192G color graphics terminals and allows users to upload and download host color graphics files between the Macintosh and the host. With MacMainFrame Graphics, users may access mainframe graphics packages such as SAS/Graph and Tell-a-Graf through IBM's Graphics Data Display Manager (GDDM). The product will run on any Macintosh that supports 32- bit color QuickDraw.
Also compatible with MacMainFrame for NetWare SAA is FrontCard -- Avatar's HyperCard-based programmer's tool for IBM mainframe front- ending. FrontCard includes a built-in fully functional 3270 terminal emulator and XFCNS and XCMDS for the development of custom HyperCard stacks. The product allows users to create HyperCard applications that replace the typical "user-unfriendly" 3270 terminal emulation screens used in SNA connectivity.
MacMain Frame for NetWare SAA is scheduled to begin shipping Nov. 1, 1992. pricing is set at $395 per user. Site licenses are available. MacMainFrame Graphics is a shipping product and is available for $195 per user. A developer's version of FrontCard can be purchased from Avatar for $2,495 which includes an unlimited runtime license. MacMainFrame For Apple's SNA ps Gateway
Based on the same principles as MacMainFrame for NetWare SAA, MacMainFrame for SNA ps is a software product which allows Macintosh computers on AppleTalk networks to access host information via an Apple Computer SNA ps Gateway. The user interface is the same industry standard MacMainFrame interface used in all MacMainFrame products and includes all of the new features and benefits of MacMainFrame 3270 version 5.0.
"Apple is please to see Avatar bring MacMainFrame to the SNA ps Gateway," explains Morris Taradalsky, Apple's vice president and general manager of the Enterprise Systems Division. "This product, when used with a SNA ps Gateway, provides our customers with additional options for Macintosh integration with their SNA networks by providing both terminal emulation and APPC support."
MacMainFrame for Apple SNA ps is scheduled to ship Nov. 1, 1992. Pricing for MacMainFrame for Apple SNA ps is set at $395 per user with site licenses available. MacMainFrame 3270 Features
In addition to IBM 3270 terminal and printer emulation capabilities, MacMainFrames's key features include tearoff menus, keyboard mapping, fully customizable color palettes, Multifinder support, on-screen font size selection, scroll boxes, and standard copy-and-paste functionality. MacMainFrame 3270 is compatible with Apple's system 7.0 which allows users to take advantage of additional Macintosh features such as Publish & Subscribe and Help Balloons. The software's file transfer feature allows true sharing of text, document and binary data between Macintosh Users and the IBM host. MacMainFrame fully supports IBM's IND$FILE host file transfer software package.
MacMainFrame 3270's multiple server support allows redundant Macintosh-to-Mainframe links to the same mainframe or allows MacMainFrame users to concurrently access multiple mainframes.
