AV SOFTBALL BEAT: HIGHLAND SOFTBALL RINGS BELLS; COACH'S ABSENCE NO PROBLEM.Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer Softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies' wasn't Glenda Potts's first priority last Saturday. But her Highland High team finished a close second to sister Erika. Needed in Vancouver, Wash., where she served as maid of honor at Erika's wedding, Potts turned the Bulldogs over to assistant coach Dan Hauptman, and Highland didn't disappoint dis·ap·point v. dis·ap·point·ed, dis·ap·point·ing, dis·ap·points v.tr. 1. The Bulldogs took out two teams ranked in the Daily News poll to win the Hart tournament, first beating Golden League rival Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2. Hill (ranked sixth) 3-1 in the semi-finals and then host Hart (ranked 10th) 1-0 in the championship game. Potts got the good news via cell phone on Saturday afternoon, after the wedding ceremony. ``They were taking the wedding pictures and my brother called,'' Potts said. ``Danny answered just as they were handing out the awards to the girls. . . . It was quite a day.'' Hauptman, a three-year Highland assistant coach, said the Bulldogs didn't need much guidance from either himself or Potts. ``They looked into the eyes of fire and went out and set the tempo tempo [Ital.,=time], in music, the speed of a composition. The composer's intentions as to tempo are conventionally indicated by a set of Italian terms, of which the principal ones are presto (very fast), vivace (lively), allegro (fast), for the rest of the day,'' Hauptman said of the Quartz Hill game. ``We had a lot of senior leadership out there.'' One of the veterans, pitcher Kelly Presten, shackled the Indians in the championship game, allowing just three hits. ``After beating Quartz Hill our confidence bolted up,'' Presten said. ``As hard as we came out in the first inning in·ning n. 1. a. Scoring three runs against Rebels' ace Jodie Cox was nice, as was a solid pitching performance by Nicole Rawson. But Potts reminded her team of the upcoming Golden League rematches with Quartz Hill. ``The way I look at it is (Quartz Hill is going to think) to take it back to us in league,'' Potts said. ``We're keeping our focus right now. . . . We're not thinking we have this thing wrapped up. Quartz Hill, Palmdale and Lancaster are all strong (league opponents).'' arrow By the way: Highland was so wrapped up in the hoopla hoop·la n. It was the first no-hitter thrown by a Highland pitcher. The news even surprised Presten. ``During the game I had no idea. No one knew until after the game,'' she said. ``It was exciting.'' arrow Paraclete: The Spirits get another chance at a Golden League powerhouse A fourth-generation language from Cognos that was introduced in the late 1970s for midrange computers. Paraclete is rebuilding after losing five starters off last season's 27-4, Division IV finalist season. The Spirits played Quartz Hill to a 2-2, 11-inning tie last Thursday in a game halted by darkness. ``We always seem to split with them,'' Potts said. ``(Paraclete coach Margaret Neill) always has good teams. She can put together a good team even when she doesn't have the talent. Even though she lost five players they always seem to step up.'' arrow Walk this way: With Quartz Hill in position to beat her Spirits, Neill went against her philosophy and intentionally in·ten·tion·al adj. 1. But Jodie was creaming the ball,'' Neill said of Cox, who had doubles in each of her first three trips to the plate. ``I hate intentional in·ten·tion·al adj. 1. It worked this time, the equally dangerous Amber Slaton popping out and the Spirits getting out of the inning. Neill was asked if her attitude on the free pass had been altered with the strategy salvaging a tie with the Rebels. ``If somebody hits the ball no matter where we pitch it, I guess I'd do it again,'' Neill said while laughing.
