The game was significant on the national level as well as the Foothill Conference standings. With the win, Chaffey (4-0) is in sole possession of first place. The Marauders fell to 3-1.

The first half had its share of momentum swings. Chaffey used a ball-control offense to keep the Marauders' potent rushing game, ranked No. 1 in the conference, on the sidelines On the sidelines

 for most the first quarter.

Running back Jeff Bogarin rushed for 30 yards and Jeff Disney threw for 72 yards, yet the Panthers only came away with three points on a Zack Bussey's 42-yard field goal.

The Marauders' defense, also ranked No. in the conference, caught a break in the second quarter. Chaffey backup quarterback, Dale Rogers, fumbled the snap and Grant Keyes recovered. However, the Marauders couldn't capitalize when Jose Duarte missed a 42-yard field goal.

The Marauders' offense struggled under Cory Allred but did no better with backup Jeff Williams, who muffed a pitch to Deandra Cobb on an option play the Panthers recovered at midfield.

Once again, however, Keyes was there to save the day. The 6-foot, 185-pound linebacker made a diving interception and the Marauders took over their own 40-yard line.

Williams mishandled another snap, this time from the shotgun set, and the ball bounced back to midfield. Cobb scrambled to recover the ball and then zig-zagged nearly 60 yards before he ended up in the end zone to make the score 9-7 just before halftime.

The Marauders would not be heard from again.

Chaffey's defense did an effective job stopping Allred, who entered the game completing more than 73 percent of his passes. By blitzing the Rosamond High graduate early and often, the Panthers disrupted his rhythm and sacked him seven times.
