AUTO WORKERS HOLD 'BUY AMERICAN' DEMONSTRATION

AUTO WORKERS HOLD 'BUY AMERICAN' DEMONSTRATION
United Auto Workers Region 9, headquartered in Cranford, N.J., and

its Local 595 representing the workers of the General Motors plant in Linden, N.J., will be holding a mass demonstration on Thursday, Feb. 20.
The demonstration will be on the theme "Be American, Buy American." Location will be outside the General Motors plant on both sides of Route 1 in Linden from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Several New Jersey Congressional Representatives, Governor Florio, Commissioner of Labor Ray Bramucci, and State Senator Ray Lesniak have been invited to speak between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
The demonstration will be supported by other unions represented by the Industrial Union Council (IUC) of New Jersey. Organizing efforts for this event have reached out to over 20,000 people. About 4,000 to 5,000 people are expected to line both sides of the highway from the Local 595 Union Hall at Route 1 and Stiles Street and extend for approximately 3/4 mile past the plant.
Balloons, bumper stickers, and leaflets will be distributed to the demonstrators as well as to the public.
Local 595 President Charles Marshall said in a statement to the IUC executive board, "For too long we have been quiet while people both inside and outside the United States have degraded American workers and the products we make. We will no longer be silent. Where are the classic Japanese cars? How much is a '57 Honda worth today? Much less than a '57 Chevy. We don't make inferior products. We never did and we're going to keep telling the American public until they understand that most jobs in the economy are tied to basic industries like auto."
