AUTO RACING: AREA DRIVERS IN SOUTHWEST.

Byline: Timothy Haddock

The 2000 NASCAR NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), organization that sanctions American stock-car races, est. 1948. It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Featherlite Southwest Series will start in Phoenix on Feb. 6 without a familiar face. But a regular from the Winston West Series' will try to make up for the loss on the Southwest Series.

Kurt Busch Kurt Thomas Busch (born August 4, 1978 in Las Vegas, Nevada) is a NASCAR driver. He drives the #2 Miller Lite Dodge in Nextel Cup Series and part time in Busch Series driving the #12 Penske Truck Rental Dodge.  of Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States. , who set a series record with four straight wins at the end of the 1999 season, jumped to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series to drive for Jack Roush Jack Roush (born April 19, 1942) is the founder, CEO, and co-owner along with John Henry of Roush Fenway Racing, a NASCAR team headquartered in Concord, North Carolina, and is Chairman of the Board of Roush Enterprises. , leaving the Southwest Series without its champion.

But that doesn't mean the Southwest Series will be without a series champion for the 2000 season. Sean Woodside of Saugus, the 1999 Winston West champion, will drive for REF Motorsports and Bob Farmer on the Southwest Series.

Woodside drove for Bill McAnally on the Winston West Series in 1999 en route to two victories, $223,385 in prize money and the series crown. But McAnally moved the team from Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  to Las Vegas, where he started a new team, Orleans Racing, with a new driver, Brendan Gaughan Brendan Gaughan (born July 10, 1975 in Los Angeles, California) is a truck racer from Las Vegas, Nevada. Gaughan is the grandson of Vegas gaming pioneer Jackie Gaughan and son of Michael Gaughan, a hotel and casino magnate. . Until Jan. 17, Woodside didn't have a team to race for on any NASCAR racing The NASCAR Racing series of video games, developed by Papyrus, started in 1994 and ended with the release of NASCAR Racing 2003 Season in 2003. Later NASCAR games were released by Electronic Arts, who took over the official sport license.  series.

That is until he tested with Farmer at Mesa Marin Raceway Mesa Marin Raceway was a high banked half mile racetrack in Bakersfield, California that was demolished following the 2005 racing season to make way for housing developments in the foothills of northeast Bakersfield.  in Bakersfield earlier this month. Farmer decided to let Woodside replace his driver, Dennis Dyer Dennis Victor Dyer (born May 2, 1914, Durban, Natal, died June 16, 1990, Durban, Natal) was a South African cricketer who played in 3 Tests in 1947.

Dennis Dyer was an opening right-hand batsman who announced himself with an innings of 185 for Natal against Western Province

It opened in 1964, as the new home of major open-wheel racing in the Phoenix area, replacing the track at the Arizona State Fairgrounds as an automobile racing venue. . The Southwest Series will also make three stops at Irwindale Speedway Irwindale Speedway is a motorsports facility located in Irwindale, California. It features banked, paved 1/2 and 1/3 mile oval tracks. It is mainly used for USAC sprint car and regional NASCAR races.  and three stops at Mesa Marin Raceway. The series will have 19 events at 14 race tracks across six states, including the first ever NASCAR points race in New Mexico. In addition, the Southwest Series will be part of the Los Angeles Street Los Angeles Street is a historic avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, California.

Traffic on the street travels northbound only, from the I-10 Freeway in the south of downtown, through the Fashion District, and on through Little Tokyo, where it ends after passing between LAPD

Among those from the area who will compete in the Southwest Series are Keith Spangler, M.K. Kanke, Bob Lyon, Nick Joanides, Greg Pursley, Frank Maronski Jr. and Larry Krieger.

Spangler, 30, of Chatsworth, had a career-best second-place finish in his 1998 Monte Carlo at Irwindale Speedway, one of the most exciting races on the Southwest Series last season.

``I lost by about 12 inches,'' the Granada Hills High graduate said. More precisely, Spangler lost by .019 seconds to Pursley at the first Southwest Series race ever run at Irwindale Speedway.

A five-year veteran of the series, Spangler said he hopes to race every event in 2000, despite not having a primary sponsor, which kept him out of a number of races last year.

Kanke, formerly of Granada Hills and now living in Frazier Park, won one race and had three top-10 finishes while racing in only six series events in 1999.

Lyon of Agua Dulce continues to be the iron man of the Southwest Series, as the only driver to compete in 200 races and 144 straight. The 37-year-old driver finished eighth in points and had five top-10 finishes in his 1999 Monte Carlo.

Lyon, a 13-year veteran of the Southwest Series, took his new car out for initial testing Jan. 8 and 9 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Joanides of Woodland Hills will look to improve on last season's success, when he had one pole and one top-10 showing in 12 events. He finished 18th in points.

Pursley of Newhall won the Southwest Series Bud Pole Award for winning the most pole positions and had five top-10 finishes in 1999 but was 20th in points. His future on the Southwest Series is in doubt, but a series official believes he will return for the 2000 season, if only on a part-time basis.

Maronski, 30, of Quartz Hill, won the first race of his five-year Southwest Series career last season at Irwindale Speedway.

``That was the biggest, most exciting race for us,'' said the graduate of Notre Dame High School Notre Dame is the name of the following high (secondary) schools: Bangladesh
  • Notre Dame College (Dhaka) in Dhaka, Bangladesh
Canada
  • Notre Dame High School (Calgary) in Calgary, Alberta
in Sherman Oaks. ``It was just one of those races where everything came together.''

Maronski said he plans to race the full Southwest Series schedule this year, which would be an accomplishment. In his five years on the series, he has completed only two full seasons. In previous years, he has been hampered by funding and sponsorship hurdles.

Krieger of Thousand Oaks will make a run at the Southwest Series rookie points title. Krieger has spent several years on the Southern California short-track circuit, most recently in the NASCAR Late Model and Grand-Am Modified divisions at Irwindale Speedway. Krieger won the 1999 Grand-Am Modified points title at Irwindale Speedway.

Other drivers who will race a handful of times on the series in 2000 include Harry Brady of Agua Dulce, who competed in seven races in 1999 and finished 39th in points, and Charles Utts of Camarillo, a former NASCAR Modified Stock champion at Mesa Marin Raceway and Late Model driver at Irwindale Speedway.

--Big SCORE Tim and Ed Herbst of Las Vegas, Nev., won the featured Trophy-Truck division in their Ford-F150 Sunday in the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, the season opener of the five-race 2000 SCORE Desert Series.

In other classes, George Seeley of Glendale won the Class 5 (Unlimited Baja Bugs - 104 miles) in 2 hours, 23 minutes, 52 seconds. Seeley averaged 43.37 mph on the 13-mile desert race course.

Bill Markel of Lancaster was second in the Class 7S (Stock mini trucks - 78 miles) in 2 hours, 27 minutes, 31 seconds.

Mike Malloy of Burbank was fifth and Michael Duenas of Lake View Terrace was seventh in the Class 1-2/1600 (single or two-seaters, limited 1600cc - 104 miles. Malloy finished the course in 2 hours, 21 minutes, 4 seconds and Duenas finished in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 4 seconds.

Ty Goode of Lancaster was seventh in the SCORE LITE Class (Limited single or two-seater, 1835cc - 104 miles) in 2 hours, 25 minutes, 7 seconds.

--Race tragedy On a more somber note, Larry Deaton, 41, of Clovis died Saturday when his open-wheel desert race car was involved in a three-car accident during the Unlimited Class I race on opening day of the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge.

``This was truly a tragic race accident and our heartfelt wishes go out to Larry's family,'' said Sal Fish, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization.
