AUTO PRODUCTION BOOSTS DETROIT EDISON DECEMBER SALES

DETROIT, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit Edison's (NYSE: DTE) electricity sales in southeastern Michigan, bolstered for the second consecutive month by increased automotive production, rose 7.5 percent in December from December 1991 levels.
Total system sales were 3.6 billion kilowatthours (kWh) last month.
Sales to industrial customers, which included a 21.8-percent gain among automotive manufacturers, rose 9.3 percent in December from the same month in 1991.
Residential sales were up 1.2 percent while commercial sales were flat.
Total December sales -- including sales to other utilities -- increased 4.9 percent to 3.8 billion kWh. Last month also marked the setting of a record winter peak demand, when customers demanded 6.7 million kWh between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Dec. 14.
Strong November and December sales were not enough to overcome unseasonably cool summer temperatures and a slow economy, which led to flat electricity sales by Detroit Edison for all of 1992.
Sales of 40.7 billion kilowatthours in southeastern Michigan in 1992 followed a record sales year in 1991 when 41 billion kWh were delivered to the utility's residential, commercial, industrial and other customers.
The cool summer weather reduced the need for air conditioning and was reflected in residential sales of 11.3 billion kWh in 1992, a 7.5-percent decline from the previous year. Commercial sales also were down 2.3 percent to 8.7 billion kWh.
Industrial customers used 18.5 billion kWh last year, a 1.5-percent increase from 1991.
Total sales for 1992 fell 5.8 percent to 43.9 billion kWh.
Detroit Edison added 7,000 residential customers and 800 commercial customers in 1992.
