AUTO DEALERS GET CITY BACKING $60,000 ALLOCATED FOR AD CAMPAIGN.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- The city will give $60,000 to the local auto dealers' organization to continue a shop-locally ad campaign.

Auto dealerships generate $6 million in sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  revenue for the city's coffers. Since 2001, city government has been joining in the campaign encouraging people to buy vehicles in Santa Clarita.

The council last week approved $60,000 as the latest grant to the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Automobile Dealers Association's ad program.

Some questioned favoring one type of business over others in contributing to advertising, but City Manager Ken Pulskamp said there is no quid pro quo [Latin, What for what or Something for something.] The mutual consideration that passes between two parties to a contractual agreement, thereby rendering the agreement valid and binding. , and the city treasury gets an ``outstanding return on our investment.''

Sales tax revenue -- the city receives 1 percent of the money generated locally -- accounts for 38 percent of the city's general-fund revenue.
