A series of lethal late-night crashes capped a deadly weekend that saw nine people killed on Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and Ventura county roads.

Three people died late Saturday after their car slammed into a ditch on the side of Little Tujunga Road, just south of Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los . Saturday night's fatal crashes may have happened within minutes of each other shortly before midnight.

Investigators on Little Tujunga Road on Sunday estimated that a white Hyundai hatchback plunged off the road into a shallow ditch around 11 p.m. Saturday.

The car, largely hidden from the twisting road by bushes, was not spotted until 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

California Highway Patrol officers found no skid marks leading to the spot where the car left the road, rolled onto its right side and slammed into the far side of the ditch.

``Right now, it looks like this vehicle just drove off the road,'' said Sgt. Kerri Hawkins. ``There's no indication of high speed; there's no indication of braking.''

Hawkins said investigators found beer inside the car. ``We will, of course, look at intoxication intoxication, condition of body tissue affected by a poisonous substance. Poisonous materials, or toxins, are to be found in heavy metals such as lead and mercury, in drugs, in chemicals such as alcohol and carbon tetrachloride, in gases such as carbon monoxide, and  as a factor,'' she said.

The force of the impact flung two passengers halfway through the windshield. Two women and one man died in the crash.

Lt. Michael Riddle of the coroner's office identified the victims as Maria Martinez, 51, of Sun Valley, Maria Alvarez, 53, and Felix Alvarez. Further information was not available.

A fourth person, possibly the driver, survived the crash and apparently stumbled down the road, where he was spotted by people who called authorities, Hawkins said. Investigators found the man on Sunday and were questioning him, said CHP CHP Chapter

The Agua Dulce collision happened about 11:40 p.m. For unknown reasons, a car driven by a Canyon Country woman crossed a double-yellow line on Sierra Highway just west of Anthony Road and rammed head-on into a Jeep driven by a Lancaster man, highway patrol officers said.

The woman, 40, and the man, 39, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names were withheld pending notification of next of kin The blood relatives entitled by law to inherit the property of a person who dies without leaving a valid will, although the term is sometimes interpreted to include a relationship existing by reason of marriage. In Santa Paula, Dayna Renee Brooks, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene of that crash, which happened at 2:35 a.m. Sunday. The Ventura County Coroner's Office found ``possible evidence of alcohol consumption,'' according to Deputy Coroner James Baroni. But toxicology reports will not be available for several weeks, he said.
