The humble book proved quite a draw Thursday for the MTV MTV
 in full Music Television

 generation as some 2,000 youngsters, their parents in tow, celebrated the written word at the Passport to Reading festival at Taft High School.

The third-annual event brought kids of elementary to high school age face-to-face with 36 authors, storytellers and illustrators amid a spectacle of balloons, rock music and volunteers in floppy Dr. Seuss Noun 1. Dr. Seuss - United States writer of children's books (1904-1991)

``It's true for a lot of people - computers, TV and all that take away from reading,'' said 14-year-old Taft High School freshman Stephen Trammel. ``But this shows that reading can be fun, and you can learn about the authors and how they made their books.''

The three-hour festival was equal parts family affair, book signing and readings. It has grown more popular since the first year when the turnout was so intense it caused a SigAlert on the nearby Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. It is the principal east-west route through Ventura County and in the southern San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County. . Parking was again a challenge Thursday.

The event was co-sponsored by the eight schools in the Taft complex and funded through grants from the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Annenberg Metropolitan Project, Mattel Hand-in-Hand Foundation and several other corporate contributors.

For most of the evening, authors read and talked about their works with audiences of 30 or so in classrooms.

Joel Domine, 38, a teacher-in-training from Woodland Hills, came for pointers on presenting literature. He brought his two daughters so they could meet the authors.

Jamie Domine, 10, needed little prodding: ``I wanted to go cause it sounded fun - all those books!''

Author Liza Hall of Tarzana, who interviewed students at Taft about teen-age bulimia bulimia: see eating disorders. , said she hoped the festival will inspire youngsters to make more time for reading.

``So many of them are looking to escape, and if that's what they want, books are a great way to do it,'' Hall said.
