AUTHOR JONATHAN SELWOOD CAREENS AROUND CITY OF HIS YOUTH IN HIS FIRST NOVEL, 'PINBALL'.Byline: EVAN EVAN Expandable Van HENERSON >LA.COM (1) (Computer Output Microfilm) Creating microfilm or microfiche from the computer. In his first novel, "The Pinball Theory of Apocalypse," the Hollywood-born and -reared author envisions L.A. as an earthquake-rocked, tar-pit boiling cesspool cesspool: see septic tank. of sin and superficiality, which his heroine, Isabel Raven, must navigate. Speaking from a somewhat safe haven 1. Designated area(s) to which noncombatants of the United States Government's responsibility and commercial vehicles and materiel may be evacuated during a domestic or other valid emergency. 2. in Portland, Ore., -- but back in town for a reading/signing Tuesday at Hollywood's Book Soup -- Selwood shared some thoughts with LA.com. You've written a love it/loathe it valentine to L.A. and you live in ... Portland? There are so many L.A. people living in Portland, and so much traffic moving back and forth. The whole West Coast has become one megacity or something. A big part of the reason I don't live in L.A. anymore is because it's very expensive. Portland is a much less expensive city if you just want to write. What got "Pinball" spinning in your mind? I was born and raised in Hollywood, and the age-old Hollywood conflict between art and commerce was always of interest to me. There's the feeling that L.A. is this superficial place where artists and writers go to die. At the same time, L.A. is arguably the most artistic city in world, entertaining billions of people with movies and TV. I got the kernel of an idea, and I was hanging out a lot with artists, so I started thinking about writing it. I decided to make her an artist. If it's ever a movie, who plays Isabel? I think Mandy Moore would be great for Isabel. I haven't talked to her about it, but if she reads this ... Isabel is advised to "develop a delusional approach to the world." Do you follow that advice? I think I do to some extent. As much as I sort of consider myself a lapsed anarchist, as much as I try not to care, I find myself caring about the world. Maybe being raised in Hollywood and never having that sense of deep roots because of the sort of shifting nature of Hollywood, I always have felt kind of alienated from the world and watching it on a delusional course. Your author bio makes reference to the "nude cocaine parties of your youth." When you get back into town, are you able to regularly partake? My parents still live in the Hollywood Hills The Hollywood Hills, an unofficial designation of part of the City of Los Angeles, California, are part of the eastern section of the low transverse range of the Santa Monica Mountains, which extends from the Los Feliz District and Hollywood, on the south side of the Valley, to , I always go there, and I just love to walk around. It's almost as if I'm experiencing the environment of L.A. affecting me by osmosis osmosis (ŏzmō`sĭs), transfer of a liquid solvent through a semipermeable membrane that does not allow dissolved solids (solutes) to pass. Osmosis refers only to transfer of solvent; transfer of solute is called dialysis. . I particularly love to hike in Griffith Park, and go to Mount Hollywood. It's not really a nude cocaine party, but it's fun. evan henerson, (818) 713-3651 evan.henerson@dailynews.com "PINBALL THEORY OF APOCALYPSE" >What: Author Jonathan Selwood signs his new book, "Pinball Theory of Apocalypse." >Where: Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles.
