Michelle Moran Michelle Moran (born August 11, 1980) is a bestselling American author.

Born in Los Angeles, California and educated at Pomona College and Claremont Graduate University, she worked as a high-school English teacher for six years before turning to fiction writing

to publishers since she was 12. "Nefertiti" is the first novel for 28-year-old who lives in San Bernardino County.

What's the book about?

"Nefertiti" is historical fiction, weaving a compelling story around factual people and events of ancient Egypt. Nefertiti was a woman destined des·tine

to rule as one of history's most fascinating queens. Her sister Mutnodjmet narrates the tale.

Nefertiti becomes the wife of King Amunhotep. Their united ambitions win them the adoration of the people, but they make powerful enemies at court.

Mutnodjmet is Nefertiti's sole confidant, but then becomes the lover of a general in the Egyptian army, an enemy of the king and queen.

Who was Nefertiti?

Nefertiti was one of the most powerful women to rule Egypt. She had her own temples, drove her own chariot, and commissioned her own artwork. She was considered a heretic by those who came after her because of her role in erasing Egypt's gods and putting herself and her husband in their place. In my view, Nefertiti was a vulnerable girl given in marriage to an unstable young pharaoh who challenged the religion of Egypt.

Why did you choose to tell the story through Nefertiti's sister Mutnodjmet?

Nefertiti would not have been a trustworthy narrator NARRATOR. A pleader who draws narrs serviens narrator, a sergeant at law. Fleta, 1. 2, c. 37. Obsolete. . She was incredibly ambitious, and would not have hesitated to lie or flatter her way to a position of power. The historical Mutnodjmet, by contrast, didn't seem to have ambition, so I felt that she made a much more credible voice. With two such startlingly star·tle

different sisters, however, there was bound to be conflict, and from that conflict comes what I hope is an epic Egyptian tale.

What inspired you to write about a queen who's been dead for more than 3,000 years?

I was visiting Berlin, where a stunning bust of Nefertiti rests behind a case of polished glass. I was captivated cap·ti·vate

by her. She was so beautiful. I wondered who she was, what her story must have been. I began researching her life and discovered many books and Internet sites devoted to her. Although she was one of the most enigmatic Egyptian queens, there were no fictionalized accounts exclusively about her reign. It was a gem of an untold story.

So how much of the story is true?

While the main historical events are accurate, I took liberties with personalities, names and minor historical events.

How long did it take you to write "Nefertiti: A Novel"?

About a year of research, more than two years to write, another year to edit it, and a fourth to publish.

What made you fall in love with Egypt? When?

My love affair with Egyptology began in the summer of 1999 on my second archaeological dig in Israel. While our team was working to unearth an ancient city used as a trading post trading post

stones in the dirt, untouched for who knew how many years and embellished with rough-hewn hieroglyphics, I was hooked.

What's next?

I'm working on "Heretic Queen," which is due out in July of 2008. It follows Nefertiti's niece, who dons armor and goes into battle to become a warrior queen.
