AUSTRALIA INUNDATED BY APPLICANTS FOR $85,000 JOBS THAT DON'T EXIST
WASHINGTON, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Bogus employment placement agencies have duped hundreds of unemployed Americans into paying up to $1,200 to get information about non-existent jobs in Australia.
The Australian Embassy in Washington is receiving up to 50 telephone calls and complaints a day from victims. Some have left jobs and rented their houses after being assured by agency staff that high-paying Australian jobs were guaranteed.
Bogus job placement agencies in Florida, California and New York are currently running press and TV ads claiming that Australian companies are actively seeking to employ Americans even though Australia actually has an unemployment rate of over 10 percent -- higher than the U.S. jobless level.
The companies promise tax-free $85,000 jobs, free transportation and free health care in Australia but charge a fee ranging from $89 to $1,200 for largely worthless employment guides and advice. Victims later discover that the U.S. and Australian companies listed in the guides have no jobs and have usually never been consulted about the listings.
"These placement agencies claim to guarantee tax-free jobs and falsely imply that they can fast-track applicants through the visa and immigration process," said Christopher Sweeney, counsellor for public affairs at the Embassy of Australia in Washington.
"We have received numerous complaints from companies in Australia that they are listed in booklets and guides sold by the job placement firms and have received an avalanche of resumes and applications even though they are not hiring."
