"I'd favour an Australian referee. And since we've played England under an English referee, I don't think they should whinge if they play under an Australian one.

"I'd like to see the best referee, irrespective of where he's from but it's become a political thing." The Aussies were also angered by Ganson in last year's World Cup final defeat when, as video referee, he awarded New Zealand a controversial late penalty try.

England assistant boss Steve McNamara said: "We've been asked our opinion and passed it on to the people that matter.

"Whoever they decide, we will go along with that."
