), a provider of enterprise storage solutions, has announced three additions to the family of NS3000 storage appliances introduced last May. The new products will include a fibre-based network server with added fault tolerance See fault tolerant.

(architecture) fault tolerance - 1. The ability of a system or component to continue normal operation despite the presence of hardware or software faults. This often involves some degree of redundancy.

2.
and a high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  server pair -- both shipping this month -- plus a fabric-attached storage solution scheduled for release in early 2002 that will be the first product of its kind to enable files to be accessed from non-proprietary storage media.

Auspex is currently forging strategic relationships that will support its efforts to achieve storage interoperability as part of its fabric-attached storage initiative. The first of those relationships, with Brocade and JNI (Java Native Interface) A programming interface (API) in Sun's Java Virtual Machine used for calling native platform elements such as GUI routines. "Our NS3000 product family has been engineered to meet the diverse storage needs of different enterprises as well as to move toward a universal storage management solution that overcomes the inefficiencies and extra expense of today's vendor-specific storage strategies," said Mike Worhach, President of Auspex Systems. "From our new modular design In the context of systems engineering, modular design — or "modularity in design" — is an approach aiming to subdivide a system into smaller parts (modules) that can be independently created and then used in different systems to drive multiple functionalities.  to fibre connectivity and the ability to mirror and stripe between multiple RAID controllers, we are building next-generation data management solutions that offer a wide array of choices and capabilities for storing and delivering enterprise data assets."

"The new NS3000 systems offer the user the kind of high end availability features we want to see," said Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst for Milford, MA-based Enterprise Storage Group. "The move toward open storage demonstrates that Auspex is willing to provide the flexibility that customers want, enabling SAN users to add file services on top of whatever infrastructure they already have. All in all, good show."

The new products will augment Auspex's complete line of storage solutions, including the NS3010 network server and the small, low-cost Auspex "brat" server announced last month. The "brat" occupies roughly half the space of a typical Auspex server for flexible placement in the office environment, while delivering the same market-leading performance as a full-sized Auspex system.

Auspex file servers are used by industries and enterprises around the world to optimize storage management infrastructures and provide fast, reliable access to multi-terabytes of consolidated UNIX UNIX

and Windows data. Auspex's NS3000 family of storage appliances offers the market's fastest performance as well as native UNIX and Windows support for fast, secure cross- platform file sharing.

Auspex introduced the world's first Network Attached Storage (NAS (1) See network access server.

Auspex's enterprise-class network servers are used by customers around the world because of their advanced feature set, including the industry's highest scalability and most secure UNIX and Windows data sharing.
