            AUGUST PREVENTION ISSUE CONTAINS INFORMATION
WITH POSSIBLE FIRE HAZARD TO CONSUMER
EMMAUS, Pa., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The publishers of Prevention magazine announced today that they have discovered an article in the August 1992 issue of the publication that may present a possible danger to the consumer.
The article, "Cook It Lean, Cook It Fast," which appears on page 72 of the August issue, contains a cooking tip for preparing microwave popcorn using an ordinary paper bag.
Although Prevention tested this procedure as the magazine does with all cooking and recipe articles, it was brought to the editors' attention after publication of the issue that this process, under certain circumstances, can be a potential fire hazard. According to microwave industry experts, the bag may ignite if kernels reach excessive temperatures or if the paper is recycled and contains metallic fibers.
It is for that reason that the Prevention editors recommend that all consumers not use ordinary paper bags for microwaving popcorn, or any substance and instead, use only containers that have been designed specifically for this purpose and follow manufacturer's directions.
In addition to notifying consumers, the editors have issued an alert to subscribers of the magazine to warn them of the potential dangers of this procedure.
"As the nation's leading health publication, we feel it our obligation to warn consumers about any danger, even when remote, that may be caused by anything appearing in our magazine," said Emrika Padus, editor of Prevention. "While we did not encounter any problems with the microwave cooking tip during our testing period, we believe it is in our reader's and the consumers's best interest and safety not to use ordinary paper bags for microwaving popcorn or for that matter any substance."
