AUGUST HEALTHCARE SERVICES, INC. AWARDED SERVICE CONTRACT FOR STATE OF WASHINGTON

MINNEAPOLIS, March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- August Healthcare Services, Inc. (AHS), a Minneapolis-based managed health care company, today announced the signing of a major service contract to provide managed care services for the State of Washington Department of Labor and Industries. Washington State, with the nation's largest workers' compensation fund covering more than 1.5 million insured workers, will allocate up to $7.9 million to this program over the next three years.
This contract expands the scope of services AHS currently provides with the addition of Medical Bill Audit, Inpatient and Outpatient Utilization Management plus on-site Case Management.
"The improved program developed with the State of Washington is the nation's premier medical cost containment model for workers' compensation," said Michael Goran M.D., president of AHS. Goran indicated that Washington State now ranks 32nd lowest in the nation for premium cost. "That's a significant improvement from having the nation's 7th highest cost in 1987. The services we provide contributed to this recovery," Goran continued.
While most states have experienced average annual premium increases of 10 to 12 percent and some states are expecting increases this year of up to 58 percent, the State of Washington will initiate an 8 percent increase for 1993. "Given the current national trend of increasing medical costs as a percentage of the premium dollar, we believe that many states will be eager to implement this cost containment model," Goran said.
August Healthcare Services, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Employee Benefit Plans, Inc. (NYSE: EBP). EBP is a leader in providing products and services to companies who self-fund their employee benefit programs. The company's common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol EBP.
