AUDIOTAPED CONFESSION TO SLAYING ADMISSIBLE.

 charged with murdering a pregnant colleague took the stand Friday as part of an unsuccessful defense effort to suppress an audiotaped confession to detectives.

For the first time, Dr. Kevin Paul Anderson, 41, of La Verne La Verne (lə vûrn), city (1990 pop. 30,897), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1906. Anderson - who was head of pediatrics at St. Luke Medical Center - was vague as to what he allegedly feared Gupta would do. He said she told him ``she knew where my daughter goes to school and she could pick her up at any time.''

``When she said that, I just lost it,'' Anderson told sheriff's detectives in the tape recording, played next to the microphone at the witness stand. ``I don't have a huge temper. But I was so angry, the first thing I thought was something would happen to my daughter.

Deputy District Attorney Marian Thompson - who is seeking the death penalty - later questioned Anderson on the stand.

``That tie was on the center console Center console may refer to:

?'' she asked.

``Yes.''

``By the time you stopped choking Gupta, it looked like she was unconscious?''

``She was unconscious.''

``She was unconscious or she was dead?''

``I presume she was dead.''

Anderson also admits on the tape to dousing Gupta's vehicle with gas and pushing it off a cliff to make her death look accidental. He said he jumped out just in time to catch the cliff's edge.

He also told investigators that he neither bought the gas because of Gupta, nor did he plan to murder her that day. As they drove in separate cars into the mountains, however, he said he considered threatening to torch her car to scare her off.
