AUDI ORDERS A CRAY RESEARCH SUPERCOMPUTER
EAGAN, Minn., Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Audi AG, the German automotive

manufacturer and member of the Volkswagen Group, has ordered and installed a CRAY Y-MP 2E supercomputer, Cray Research (NYSE: CYR) announced today.
Audi will use the CRAY Y-MP 2E system for research and development in crash analysis, finite element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics. Audi expects to shorten its development cycle for cars and components as well as to further improve product quality.
As part of this order, Audi has licensed Cray Research's Multipurpose Graphic System (MPGS), an easy-to-use post-processing and visualization software tool for engineering problems.
"We have chosen the CRAY Y-MP 2E because the system offers an optimal price-performance ratio for our requirements," said Guenter Windisch, head of Audi's Information Processing Center. "The performance of the system was verified before we made our decision by a comprehensive benchmark test with problems that reflected our daily business. Furthermore, the system integrates in a seamless manner into our heterogenous computing environment."
"We are very pleased that Audi has chosen Cray Research to provide its high performance computational tools," said Carl Diem, vice president of international sales at Cray Research. "We believe that the CRAY Y-MP 2E system will provide Audi with the power and speed required to tackle the challenges of the automotive industry."
Cray Research currently has 307 systems installed worldwide, including 20 in Germany. Approximately 10 percent of Cray Research systems are installed in the automotive industry.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
