University The Civil Engineering Students Association (CESA) at The American University in Dubai (AUD) organized The Wooden Bridge Competition, in an attempt to shed light on the importance of bridges to the infrastructure of any city, and particularly to that of Dubai, in being an antidote to traffic problems. More than a hundred engineering students from AUD, The American University of Sharjah The American University of Sharjah (AUS) (in Arabic: الجامعة الأميركية في الشارقة) is a coeducational higher educational (AUS) and UAE University took part in this competition in the presence of keen members of the faculty and student bodies at AUD, along with their fellow peers from the other participating universities. The AUD team, represented by AUD Civil Engineering students Flavio Faustini, Mohamed Alhassan and Bassilio Dahlan, bagged the competition and were awarded the grand prize, a plaque presented by CESA as well as a full civil engineering toolset, for their construction of the bridge that possessed the maximum loading apparatus, under the discretion of a panel of judges representing AUD, AUS and UAE University, respectively. The competition was held under the supervision of Dr. Edgar Small, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at AUD, with the objectives to provide a unique social experience for both students and instructors to interact, highlight the means of translating theoretical knowledge into practical application, develop a sense of teamwork among students and help them maintain a sense of economy when using materials. Rany Metry, AUD Civil Engineering Student and CESA President, reflected on the significance of organizing such competitions stating: "The Annual Wooden Bridge Competition is a great opportunity for engineers-in-the-making to shine outside the confines con·fine v. con·fined, con·fin·ing, con·fines v.tr. 1. In fact, the classroom is in no way big enough an arena for the challenges engineering students should face. It is for this reason that this competition was made: to satisfy the vibe of challenge and creativity within every engineer's soul. Bridges are vital to the economy, as the building of bridges, the importance of which is sometimes overshadowed by that of towers and skyscrapers, is in fact one of the most important parts of the civil engineering industry". In addition, a "guessing booth" was set for each of the civil engineering student attendee to guess on the bridge that could take the maximum loading apparatus, as well as on that which would collapse under the least loading apparatus, with nominal engineering points granted to the student who guessed right. The greatest number of points achieved was gained by Maxim Petrenko, an AUD Civil Engineering student. Petrenko was also awarded a CESA plaque for his possession of the "finest critical engineering judgment" among his peers. 2009 Al Bawaba (www.albawaba.com) 2009 Al Bawaba (Albawaba.com) Provided by Syndigate.info an Albawaba.com company |
