AUCTION TO BENEFIT THOUSAND OAKS SCHOOL; ST. PATRICK'S EPISCOPAL TRYING TO PAY OFF BILL FOR LAST SUMMER'S RENOVATION.

Byline: Kevin F. Sherry Daily News Staff Writer

St. Patrick's St. Patrick's or Saint Patrick's may refer to:

Episcopal Parish Day School will auction off a ride on a blimp blimp: see airship. , some exotic vacations and a piece of romantic history Saturday.

Money raised from the auction will help pay off the remaining $165,000 debt from the school's $350,000 renovation last summer, said Nancy Hawfield, office manager at the school.

``They've never had (an auction),'' she said. ``We're hoping that this'll become an annual event.''

One of the premier pieces of the 310 items to be auctioned is a framed original copy of a 1956 McCall's magazine signed by the Duke and Duchess

The magazine contains an article written by Simpson about her relationship with the duke. Her face appears on the cover, and the couple signed the white border around the picture, said Bob Dempster, who donated the magazine to the school auction.

``It's been essentially sitting in storage,'' he said. ``It's in mint condition

On an impulse, Dempster bought the magazine about 15 or 20 years ago at a Sotheby's auction.

Dempster, whose daughter Christine is in fourth grade at St. Patrick's, said he hopes someone will make better use of the magazine than keeping it in storage.

the Sanders Price Guide, such an item today could fetch up to $650 if it were sold over the counter, said Myron Ross, owner of Heroes & Legends, a Woodland Hills store for collectible items. But auctions throw out all the rules, he said.

``I've seen things go for three and four times (list price),'' he said. ``People get carried away. Look what happened at the Kennedy auction.''

Autographs of famous people are especially popular now, Ross said.

``The autograph market has just mushroomed in the past 10 years,'' he said. The Beatles, Marilyn Monroe and Babe Ruth remain perennial favorites, but the appeal of political figures like the duke and duchess depends on the crowd at the auction, he said.

Other items available at the auction include a trip to Malaysia valued at $6,500, a ride on a Goodyear blimp and a Hawaiian vacation, said Susan DeMere, co-chairwoman of the auction.

Also to be auctioned off are smaller items like theater tickets, fancy dinners, gift baskets and manicures, and other items will come from the school community.

``Each class has put together a gift,'' Hawfield said.

For example, a group of first- and second-grade students knitted squares that were combined into an afghan. No one knows how much money will be raised, but DeMere estimates it will be between $30,000 and $50,000.

``What you need is two big fans there'' to bid against each other and raise the stakes, she said.

The auction will be held Saturday evening at Sherwood Country Club, Lake Sherwood, but the event has been sold out, organizers say.
