AU BON PAIN BAKERY CAFES OPEN IN PITTSBURGH

French Bakery Cafe Chain Announces Acquisition of Warburtons
PITTSBURGH, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Au Bon Pain (pronounced Oh-Bawn-Pehn) (NASDAQ: ABPCA), a national chain of French bakery cafes headquartered in Boston, is announcing the conversion of six local Warburtons restaurants following an acquisition last year.
Grand openings of the new Au Bon Pain bakery cafes began last week and will continue through March.
"The success of Au Bon Pain has been built on the principle that our customers get exactly what they want: great food, affordable prices and fast service," said Ronald M. Shaich, co-chairman and co-CEO of Au Bon Pain. "Our entry into Pittsburgh will provide residents with a brand new eating option."
The Pittsburgh arrival of Au Bon Pain represents a first for the 11-year-old chain, which has stores located primarily in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Chicago.
In an effort to meet customer needs, Au Bon Pain features a menu that rivals those offered by the competition. All baked goods are baked on-site to ensure freshness and quality.
Au Bon Pain's menu features a selection of over 70 items, including signature French bakery items such as croissants, bagels, muffins and pastries. Custom-made sandwiches prepared with smoked meats, imported cheeses and fresh vegetables include specialties such as Cracked Pepper Chicken Breast with Honey Mustard Sauce. The wide variety of entree salads, such as Chicken Tarragon, have been approved by nutrition experts at leading health centers, and are available separately or in combination with any of the homemade soups offered each day, all prepared fresh every day with hand-cut vegetables, spices and broth. Customers also can take home any of the specialty breads or rolls, such as Cheese Bread, Three Seed and Raisin Roll or Onion Herb Bread, which are baked fresh daily and feature a trademark crispy crust.
Au Bon Pain provides an environment unmatched within the quick service food industry with a distinct style characterized by marble, granite and sleek designs.
Averaging one store opening every three weeks in the last year, Au Bon Pain also operates an extensive catering program, providing breakfast and luncheon platters to businesses. The company's state-of-the-art computerized order processing system has significantly enhanced the efficiency of the chain's catering services.
Six Pittsburgh-area Warburtons will be converted into Au Bon Pain bakery cafes. Locations include five downtown sites -- Two PPG Place, 535 Smithfield St., One Oxford Center, Fifth Avenue Place and the USX Tower -- and one suburban site in Ross Park Mall. In addition, Au Bon Pain manages two bakery cafes in the Pittsburgh International Airport.
Headquartered in Boston, Au Bon Pain is a publicly held company with 2,300 employees operating 150 bakery cafes located along the Eastern seaboard and in the Midwest. Revenues in 1992 exceeded $111.7 million.
