TUJUNGA - Attorneys for the Wildlife Waystation The Wildlife WayStation is a 160-acre refuge in northern Los Angeles County dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating wild and exotic animals. A charitable corporation located within the boundaries of Angeles National Forest, the facility was founded in 1976 by animal activist  will send a letter today asking the Department of Fish and Game to lift the order that halted many of the animal sanctuary's operations, the center's director said Monday.

Founder and Director Martine Colette said her team of attorneys decided Monday to send the letter, which will outline their reasons for the request.

But state Fish and Game officials said late Monday that they don't plan to lift the order until the violations are solved or are in the process of being solved.

``At some point, the violations we have outlined must be addressed. Once that is done, then we can go about figuring out how to fix those problems facing them,'' said Steve Martarano, spokesman for Fish and Game. ``We have always said we want the Waystation to continue its operations. Working toward that goal is in all of our best interests.''

Much of the work at the 25-year-old facility was halted recently when the California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  Department of Fish and Game ordered the way station to stop public tours, stop taking in animals, reduce the population of animals already there and prevent animal excrement excrement /ex·cre·ment/ (eks´kri-mint)

The order came a week after a three-day inspection by Fish and Game officials late last month. Officials conducted the cage-by-cage inspection of the facility which cares for 1,200 wild and exotic animals because the way station had been operating without a permit since February 1998.

Colette said the way station was ready for the inspection and had been working with Fish and Game to solve the problems. When the cease-and- desist order arrived a week after the inspection, Colette was shocked and now wonders how a cage inspection ``turned into such a witch hunt.''

Despite the controversy, the way station recently received a $100,000 donation from a charitable foundation founded by Walt Disney's late daughter. The money donated do·nate

The Lund Foundation was started by Sharon Disney Lund and has given to the way station in the past. The recent allegations against the facility did not discourage them from donating the money.

``That inspired us to give now,'' said Patricia Patti, assistant to the director of the foundation. ``Where else do you take an animal?''
