ATTACKS FORCE REDESIGN OF BREEDERS' CUP LOGO.

Breeders' Cup The Breeders' Cup World Championships is an annual series of Grade I thoroughbred horse races operated by Breeders' Cup Limited, a company formed in 1982 by a consortium of North American racing organizations, led by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.  organizers are scrambling to redesign the logo for the Oct. 27 event at Long Island's Belmont Park Noun 1. Breeders' Cup president D.G. Van Clief Jr. said some New Yorkers complained that continuing to use the logo would be inappropriate. Van Clief said other New Yorkers said, ``Please do not change it. We'll be offended if you did.''

The latter group will be relieved to know the logo already is emblazoned on Breeders' Cup hats and shirts and there's no plan to recall the merchandise.

The logo fiasco is not significant in itself, but it's emblematic of the Sept. 11 terror attacks' impact on the horse racing horse racing, trials of speed involving two or more horses. It includes races among harnessed horses with one of two particular gaits, among saddled Thoroughbreds (or, less frequently, quarterhorses) on a flat track, or among saddled horses over a turf course with  industry.

--Because of complications with air travel, some California trainers are scrapping plans to ship horses to Breeders' Cup preps at Belmont Park, where they would have gotten the benefit of races over the track.

If anybody could be said to gain from this, it would be the Oak Tree Racing Association The Oak Tree Racing Association is an American not-for-profit corporation that exists to conduct live thoroughbred horse racing in Southern California. History

The Norfolk might mark the first meeting of Officer and Came Home, the California horse who won the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga but is back at Santa Anita.

Reigning Horse of the Year Tiznow was delayed in getting back to Santa Anita after finishing a strong third to Lido Palace in the Woodward Stakes at Belmont in his return from injury. Now that Tiznow is home, his handlers are said to be leaning toward staying here for the $400,000 Goodwood Handicap on Oct. 7 - instead of immediately shipping out again for the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup The Jockey Club Gold Cup, established in 1919, is a prestigious thoroughbred flat race open to horses of either gender three-years-old and up. Horsemen have not expressed fear of traveling, however.

``I think it is on their minds, but I think they're still going to do what they planned for the most part,'' Santa Anita racing secretary Mike Harlow said of trainers. ``I haven't heard anyone say, 'I'm not going anywhere, with what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. Eight of Oak Tree's 12 graded stakes are scheduled for the meet's first two weekends so they can be used as Breeders' Cup preps.

--Because Belmont Park, which is 23 miles from the World Trade Center, remained closed until Wednesday, four stakes races had to be canceled last weekend. --Van Clief said he doesn't expect ``any meaningful difficulties'' for horses shipping to the Breeders' Cup from overseas. He said the event has received ``less than 100 cancellations'' from ticket-holding fans.

``We think this was a cowardly act against civilians, and we are 100 percent against it,'' Sheikh Mohammed has been quoted as saying. ``We are 100 percent with America and we will do anything we can to get these people, to get justice.''

On Thursday, Keeneland announced Sheikh Mohammed has donated $5 million to its fund for the victims of the terrorist attacks.

``This is my second home,'' Salman said, referring to the United States, in The Thoroughbred Times. ``We've got to get them and get them big and do like we do in Arabia - an eye for an eye.''

Salman's star horses include Officer and the recently retired Horse of the Year contender Point Given.

--Without football to bet on, gamblers turned to horse racing over the weekend, helping to swell the mutuel pools at Fairplex Park to $8.8 million on Saturday and $8 million on Sunday. Those are the fifth- and 10th-highest handles in track history.

That, despite declines in overall attendance at the Los Angeles County Fair The Los Angeles County Fair (also called simply the L.A. --Oak Tree is one of many racing associations to set up disaster-relief funds. It has invited the Red Cross to solicit contributions during Wednesday's season-opening program and has said it will match contributions up to a total of $100,000.

Ceremonies before the meet's first race will include winner's-circle appearances by jockeys and an equestrian color guard.

--Racing Form editor-publisher Steve Crist criticized the racetracks that reopened quickly last week. A handful of tracks, including Fairplex, missed only Sept. 11, the day of the attacks.

``Is the thoroughbred racing industry a professional sport like those whose popularity it envies, or a gambling enterprise like any other room full of slot machines? That question was answered bluntly this week by the industry's response to Tuesday's terrorist attacks on the United States, and it may change forever the way that American racing is perceived,'' Crist wrote.

``The other sports shut down; the casinos didn't. There's no more uncertainty about which side of that fence is the one where racing lives.''
