ATTACKERS CLAIMING TO BE POLICE SHOOT LANCASTER MAN.

A Lancaster man remained in serious condition Monday after he was shot by early morning assailants who claimed to be sheriff's deputies, sheriff's officials said.

Daniel Ortiz, 38, of Lancaster, was at home sleeping at 5:30 a.m. Monday when an unknown number of men knocked on his apartment door in the 45200 block of 7th Street East.

``When he said, `Who is it?' they said they were sheriffs,'' said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County sheriff's Deputy Brian Schoonmaker. ``As he opened the door, they began to fire.''
