), today announced it has received its 100th United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  patent. ATMI has an additional 16 patents allowed, more than 100 US patents pending, and numerous patent licenses and foreign patents. ATMI received its 50th patent just 3 years ago, and its first patent in 1988, two years after the company was founded. Glenn Tom, one of ATMI's founders, was inventor for both ATMI's 1st and 100th patents. The 100th patent, 5,817,921, is for "Piezoelectric The property of certain crystals that causes them to produce voltage when a mechanical pressure is applied to them such as sound vibrations. This technique is used to build crystal microphones, phonograph cartridges and strain gauges, all of which turn mechanical movement into voltage.  Environmental Fluid Monitoring System and Method".
