ATMEL ADDS 256K LOW-VOLTAGE EEPROM

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel Corp. (NASDAQ: ATML) today introduced and initiated shipments of the world's only low-voltage 262,144-bit (256K) electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM).
The AT28LV256 is a nonvolatile memory circuit and is organized 32K by 8 and operates from 3 volts to 3.6 volts, with access times to 200 nanoseconds. A standard-power 5-volt device, the AT28HC256 is also available, with speeds to 90ns over the military temperature range.
"This AT28LV256 device will be critical to the manufacturers of hand- held or portable test instruments or data collection equipment. This circuit offers the opportunity to reduce the number of batteries in a system, or, as an alternate, to substantially extend the life of the same number of batteries," explained Richard Palm, Atmel's marketing manager for EEPROMs. Other Atmel low-voltage memories are used in cellular telephones and pagers, hard disk drives for laptop computers, and medical instruments, as well as in sensing equipment and in several sections of today's automobiles.
The AT28LV256 is available in a 28-pin thin, small-outline package (TSOP) that offers a total footprint of 0.156 square inches versus 0.87 square inches for a dual-in-line (DIP) package. The TSOP has a Z dimension of 0.045 inches, compared with 0.220 for standard DIPs.
Additionally, Atmel provides this circuit in standard 28-pin DIP and a plastic small outline, gull wing (SOIC) package, as well as in a 32-pin plastic leadless chip carrier (PLCC). Prices for this device in the commercial temperature range in quantities of more than 1,000 are $12 each in a plastic DIP package.
Headquartered in San Jose, with additional manufacturing facilities in Colorado Springs, Colo., Atmel designs, develops, manufactures and markets on a worldwide basis a broad line of complex integrated circuits. The company manufactures Flash, EEPROMs and EPROMs, as well as programmable logic and application-specific devices.
