ATM Forum Membership Approves Anchorage Accord Specifications.MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 1996--In a move which proving to be a milestone for the ATM Forum A membership organization founded in 1991 to promote ATM networking technology. It worked with ANSI and the ITU to set standards. Its first specification in 1992 defined the User-Network Interface (UNI). In 2004, the Forum merged with the MPLS and Frame Relay Alliance. , membership of the organization, in a meeting in Orlando, Florida The city of Orlando is a major city in central Florida and is the county seat of Orange County, Florida. According to the 2000 census, the city population was 185,951. A 2006 U.S. , approved the specifications which make up the mission-critical Anchorage Accord. Sixty specifications have been voted in. The objective of the Anchorage Accord is to identify a cohesive set of specifications that provide a stable ATM framework for product and service development. "This is really a watershed mark for the ATM Forum," stated George Dobrowski, chair of the group's Technical Committee. "It's a testament to how our membership, driven by user needs, is working cooperatively, identifying specifications and establishing new reference points on which services and products will be based." The Anchorage Accord, first introduced in April of this year, has gone through much examination in order to become a truly operating document for users and vendors. The Accord outlines Foundation specifications needed to build ATM infrastructure. It also ensures that expanded Feature specifications which are needed to enable migration to ATM multiservice networks exist and can build on the foundation. In the future, Foundations specs (SPECificationS) The details of the components built into a device. See specification. will be revised for the following reasons: to correct problems discovered by implementors or during interoperability testing; to meet ITU-T See ITU. ITU-T - International Telecommunications Union alignment; and to ensure cohesiveness/parity between specifications in support of systems level view of functions and features. The underlying criteria for these will be backwards compatibility backwards compatibility - backward compatibility and/or interoperability with previous ATM Forum specifications. Work continues beyond the Anchorage Accord. Activities will expand upon the foundation and feature specifications. Voice and Telephony Over ATM (VTOA VTOA Voice and Telephony Over ATM ) and Multi Protocols Over ATM (MPOA (MultiProtocol Over ATM) An ATM Forum standard that provides routing of legacy protocols (IP, IPX, etc.) over ATM networks.
