ATLANTIC COAST AIRLINES TRAFFIC INCREASES 101.4 PERCENT IN APRIL

WASHINGTON, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlantic Coast Airlines, which operates as United Express, today reported a 101.4 percent increase in passenger traffic for the month of April 1993. The carrier also reported year-to-date traffic figures for the first four months of 1993.
As compared to results for April 1992, the carrier's capacity, available seat miles (ASMs), increased 100.0 percent, from 37,338,000 to 74,681,000. Passenger traffic, measured in revenue passenger miles (RPMs), rose 101.4 percent, from 16,461,000 to 33,146,000. The airline's load factor, the percentage of available seats filled, gained 0.3 percentage points, from 44.1 percent to 44.4 percent. Atlantic Coast Airlines carried 122,673 passengers in April vs. 58,383 during the same month last year, a 110.2 percent increase.
For the first four months of 1993, Atlantic Coast Airlines' ASMs increased 40.5 percent, from 143,425,000 to 201,544,000, while RPMs gained 65.1 percent, from 53,605,000 to 88,478,000, resulting in a 6.6 percentage point rise in the airline's load factor. Atlantic Coast Airlines has carried 321,490 passengers in 1993, 63.5 percent more than the 196,641 passengers carried during the first four months of 1992.
"The growth in our operating results for April are primarily due to three factors: continuing year-over-year gains in our established markets, the integration of 12 deHavilland Dash-8 aircraft into our fleet and the inauguration of our United Express service in Florida," said Kerry Skeen, president of Atlantic Coast Airlines.
Employee-owned Atlantic Coast Airlines is based in Sterling, Va. It has operated as United Express since December 1989 when it began with six aircraft flying to six cities. Today, Atlantic Coast Airlines serves 54 cities in 19 states and the District of Columbia. The airline operates with a hub at Washington Dulles International Airport, where it offers 158 daily departures, the most of any airline. The United Express carrier also maintains a significant presence in Newark, Orlando and Miami. Its fleet is comprised of 56 aircraft -- 30 British Aerospace Jetstream Super 31s, 13 Embraer Brasilia 120s, five deHavilland Dash-8 100 series and seven deHavilland Dash-8 300 series and one British Aerospace Jetstream 41, with deliveries for 16 more scheduled over the next 30 months. Systemwide, Atlantic Coast Airlines operates 447 daily departures. For each flight on United Express, passengers receive 500 miles credit in United Airlines' popular Mileage Plus frequent flyer program.
