ATLANTIC COAST AIRLINES RECORDS 60.5 PERCENT PASSENGER TRAFFIC
 INCREASE IN OCTOBER
WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlantic Coast Airlines, which operates as United Express, released passenger traffic statistics for the month of October which show significant gains over the same period last year. The company also established one month records for available seat miles (ASMs), revenue passenger miles (RPMs), and number of passengers carried. Year to date totals similarly reflect the company's growth throughout the year.
For the month of October, the United Express carrier's RPM total increased 60.5 percent, while capacity rose 17.8 percent, resulting in a 14.7 percentage point jump in the airline's load factor. ASM total for Atlantic Coast Airlines reached 43,715,000, up 17.8 percent from 37,098,000 operated in October of last year. RPMs rose to 24,209,000, a 60.5 percent increase over the 15,085,000 posted last October. The carrier's load factor, the percentage of available seats filled, increased to 55.4 percent from 40.7 percent. Atlantic Coast Airlines carried 86,984 passengers during the month, a record for the company, 54.6 percent more than the 56,266 passengers carried in October 1991.
"The passenger traffic results for October are very encouraging," said Kerry Skeen, president of Atlantic Coast Airlines. "As we look at our advance booking trends, we are optimistic for continued growth for the remainder of the year."
The year to date statistics also display the company's pattern of growth during the first 10 months of the year. Atlantic Coast Airlines has operated 21.1 percent more ASMs this year than last year, reaching 384,092,000 up from 317,042,000. RPMs have grown 32.9 percent, from 135,757,000 in 1991 to 180,367,000 thus far this year. The airline has carried 654,292 passengers, 27.5 percent more than the 513,046 passengers carried during the same period in 1991. Load factor for the year has jumped 4.2 percentage points, reaching 47.0 percent.
Atlantic Coast Airlines also recently announced two major expansion initiatives that will be implemented in the near future. The United Express carrier will dramatically increase frequency in six primary Northeastern cities from the hub at Washington Dulles International Airport, to coincide with United Airlines' schedule change on Feb. 10, 1993. The airline will increase its flight schedule to Philadelphia, Newark, Rochester, Buffalo, Manchester and Providence, offering more frequencies than exist today in most of the markets. Atlantic Coast Airlines will also expand in the Northeast from Newark when the carrier begins flights to Buffalo and Rochester on Dec. 1 and will add Syracuse and Manchester service from Newark on Feb. 10, 1993.
Atlantic Coast Airlines operates as United Express through a comprehensive marketing agreement with United Airlines. The two airlines coordinate flight schedules to provide passengers with convenient connections to destinations across the country and around the world from their hub at Washington Dulles International Airport. Atlantic Coast Airlines operates a fleet of 35 aircraft -- 22 British Aerospace Jetstream 32s and 13 Embraer Brasilia 120s. At Washington Dulles, the United Express carrier currently operates 114 daily departures, most on any airline, to 41 destinations. For each flight on United Express, passengers receive 500 miles credit in United Airlines' popular Mileage Plus frequent flyer program.
