ATLANTA-BASED ALPHA MICRO TECHNOLOGIES MARKETS NEW ENERGY-SAVING DEVICE FOR COMPUTER MONITORS

ATLANTA, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Alpha Micro Technologies, an Atlanta-area based company has begun marketing MonitorManager, a new energy-saving device that turns PC monitors into energy saving units.
MonitorManager is a small electronic device that can be easily hooked to a PC's keyboard and monitor. If the PC is not used for a pre- defined time period (which can be set from one to nine minutes), MonitorManager shuts the power off to the monitor, saving electricity. While it shuts down the power to the monitor, it does not shut off the power to the computer, so users do not need to re-boot the PC each time they stop using it for a short period of time. Moreover, by reducing the unnecessary time of keeping a monitor on, MonitorManager greatly extends the total life-time of the monitor, helping preserve the value of the investment in a computer system.
A typical 14-inch monitor uses approximately 130 watts per hour. If a computer is used for 20 hours per week, and the monitor is left on for the rest of the time, the loss in the cost of energy to power the monitor for the unused time period is about $100 per year just for one monitor (148 hours x 130 Watts x 52 weeks x $0.1/1000 Watt). Considering that many corporations have hundreds and even thousands of PCs being used everyday, the amount of energy that could be saved by using MonitorManager is indeed enormous.
According to a recent EPA estimate, if all PCs are used more efficiently, the overall savings to the national energy resources would be $2 billion each year. By using devices like MonitorManager, a company can save tens of thousands of dollars in operations costs, help reduce overall national energy consumption, and help conserve the environment. Because of its tremendous potential in saving energy, MonitorManager is one of only a few PC products on the market today receiving the special recognition from EPA as an "EnergyStar" product.
