 ATLANTA GAS LIGHT COMPANY FILES
FOR INCREASE IN REVENUES OF 4.4 PERCENT
ATLANTA, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Atlanta Gas Light Company (NYSE: ATG) filed proposed new rates with the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) that would increase annual company revenues by $43,958,000, or 4.4 percent.
Even if the full rate request is approved, overall bill levels (assuming normal weather) would remain about the same as they were in 1984. If approved as filed, the proposed rates would reduce bills to typical residential customers during the winter heating season. To make up for the winter reduction, rates would be increased in the summer when consumption is low and a moderate increase would have minimum impact on family budgets.
In its filing, the company included testimony of various witnesses in support of the proposed increase. Among the reasons for the filing are 1) increased investment to provide service to both existing and new customers; 2) increased operation and maintenance expenses; 3) increased capital costs; 4) continuing decrease in average use per customer resulting from conservation and the high efficiencies available in modern gas appliances; and 5) the need for rates which are competitive with those of other energy suppliers in the company's service area.
The company proposes that the rates become effective on May 1, 1992. If the PSC suspends the rates to permit time for hearings, it is likely that new rates would go into effect Oct. 1, 1992.
Atlanta Gas Light Company is the largest distributor of natural gas in the Southeast. The company, which also operates under the trade names Georgia Natural Gas Company and Savannah Gas Company, serves about 1.2 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers in 227 Georgia communities, including metro Atlanta, Athens, Augusta, Brunswick, Macon, Rome, Savannah and Valdosta.
