He picked Monday. The subsequent tests showed blocked arteries and he was scheduled for surgery. The tests also indicated there had been no damage to the heart muscle and that Reeves had not suffered a heart attack.

``We're very optimistic he's going to have a very good result,'' said Dr. James Kauten, who performed the surgery.

``The function of the heart is normal, he's a strong man, and we think he's going to do very well long term.''

Saints coach Mike Ditka Michael Keller Ditka, Jr. (born October 18, 1939, in Carnegie, Pennsylvania) also known as Iron Mike Ditka or Da Coach, is a former American football NFL player, television commentator, and coach. Ditka coached the Chicago Bears for 11 years. , a close friend, said Monday, ``Dan didn't say anything to me (Sunday). In retrospect, he looked a little pale after the game.''

Reeves could be back next week working on the game plan for the Falcons' final game against Miami. There's even an outside chance he could be on the sideline. Harrison said, ``I see no reason at this point why he shouldn't be back for the playoffs and the Super Bowl, which I say with confidence.''

Harrison said he expects Reeves, when he gets out of the hospital, ``to be normal. I would never recommend him quitting work. He'll feel a whole lot better. Once the circulation problem is fixed and restored, I see no reason to limit a person.''

In fact, Ditka said the hardest part for Reeves ``will be watching.'' In 1988, Ditka suffered a heart attack. Ten days later, after missing one game, he was back on the Bears' sidelines.

In 1990, Reeves had an atherectomy, the removal of a blockage. In 1991, he required another procedure. This was his first bypass.

Defensive coordinator Rich Brooks, the former Rams head coach, will run the 12-2 Falcons in Reeves' absence, starting Sunday in Detroit. Brooks will remain in the press box calling the defenses and will relay game-management decisions to the sideline.
