The new organization, founded by Legato Systems, provides an industry forum for all member participants to help develop standards and interoperability that will make data movement and management of Storage Area Network (SAN) environments more effective using the open and integrated Celestra architecture. Jointly participating in the consortium with leading storage automation companies, ATL plans to be actively involved in helping to meet the organization's objectives.

The purpose of the consortium is to create an industry-wide forum consisting of leading manufacturers to advance LAN-free, serverless backup A type of LAN free backup that does not use any of the resources of an application server or a backup server. See LAN free backup.  SAN applications. From this ongoing exchange of information between vendors, the consortium will identify, define, promote and support specifications, standards and infrastructures that will enable consistency and interoperability for SAN solutions based on Celestra open architecture.

To assist members in developing robust, interoperable solutions to the market quickly and more efficiently, Legato Systems will provide consortium members with development kits, certification and marketing support programs.

ATL Products was one of the first secondary storage providers to embrace the Celestra serverless backup capability and the hardware/ software combination offers real-time backup, without host intervention, at speeds ranging up to one terabyte per hour.

"ATL's commitment to developing open, integrated SAN solutions utilizing the Celestra technology, is a big win for customers," said Paul JJ Payack, vice president of worldwide marketing, Legato Systems. "With ATL's expertise in the library storage market, we are pleased to have them on the team."

"ATL has joined the Consortium because of the many benefits that Celestra promises our customers including continuous, high-performance, 24x7 accessibility of enterprise applications with fail-safe data protection that eliminates the need for backup windows," said Frank Berry, vice president of marketing for ATL Products.

"The Celestra Consortium is an outstanding next step in providing developers, like ATL, with the tools and support for creating more robust LAN-free, serverless backup solutions."

About Legato Celestra

Legato's Celestra introduced an open, distributed architecture that optimizes data movement efficiency in SAN environments. Data movement is performed by an intelligent SAN device that complies with the open standard SCSI SCSI

Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB.
Extended Copy specification. Data movement intelligence is provided by Legato Celestra agents, enabling powerful applications such as serverless, outboard backup that eliminates the backup window.

Control is provided by Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol) An open standard for backing up data in a heterogeneous environment. Developed by Network Appliance and IntelliGuard Software, NDMP uses a common data format which is written to and read from drivers for the specific disk and )-compliant control applications such as Legato NetWorker. This open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced  approach means maximum customer ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot).  and operational efficiency.
