Company's Open Prism Library Architecture(TM)

ATL (Active Template Library) A set of software routines from Microsoft that provide the basic framework for creating ActiveX and COM objects. Stemming from the standard template library (STL) that comes with C++ compilers, ATL includes an object wizard that sets up  Products, a leading supplier of intelligent DLTtape(TM) libraries for networked computers, Thursday announced three Fibre Channel solutions and immediate product availability in support of the company's Network Storage Systems strategy for Storage Area Network (SAN) connectivity.

The first of ATL's Fibre Channel solutions is an embedded Fibre Channel interface option that is factory-installed for new purchases of the P1000 Series and P3000 Series libraries and based on the company's popular Prism Library Architecture(TM). For those P1000 Series and P3000 Series libraries already deployed in the field, ATL's second Prism-based solution consists of a Fibre Channel field upgrade kit that converts the SCSI-based library into a SAN-enabled library.

And for those customers who currently use or are planning to use non-Prism based ATL autoloaders and libraries, such as the PowerStor L200, PowerStor L500, 520 Series, 7100 Series and 2640 Series, ATL's third Fibre Channel solution features a Crossroads 4200 external Fibre Channel bridge. This solution allows all ATL SCSI-based libraries to be connected to Fibre Channel Storage Area Networks.

Server-Attached Storage Problems

Today's storage is server-attached via SCSI SCSI
in full Small Computer System Interface

Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB.
. Since it is completely dependent on the server, such storage is not highly available because when the server goes down, the server-attached applications are impacted and become unavailable to connected users. Server-attached storage is also not readily scalable because of design restrictions within individual servers.

Server-attached storage is also performance limited because when accessed or backed up across a LAN/WAN LAN/WAN Local Area Network/Wide Area Network , it is severely impacted by the bandwidth of commercially available network capabilities.

ATL's network storage systems strategy provides intelligent, consolidated secondary storage solutions for the open enterprise. This strategy recognizes that IT departments face a staggering challenge to make data immediately available to every client regardless of the platform supported.

In a world where secondary storage has traditionally been a server-associated resource, the new enterprise environments require that storage includes universal connectivity, can be shared across multiple host systems, can be centrally managed and is highly available.

ATL's SAN-Attached Storage Strategy

Utilizing the High Availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  innovations designed within the P1000 Series and P3000 Series libraries, such as hot-swappable drives and power supplies, coupled with ATL's powerful Prism Library Architecture, the company has established a leadership position in providing fault-tolerant, high-performance tape libraries to the enterprise.

ATL has pioneered a new class of open, intelligent storage subsystems The part of a computer system that provides the storage. It includes the controller and disk drives. See storage system.  that incorporate an industry standard PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

The design is centered on a single or dual microprocessor with RAM, IO and all other features needed to be a functional computer on the one board. . With data requirements changing quickly and the constant volatility of IS infrastructures, Prism-enabled ATL libraries allow customers to use SCSI interfaces SCSI interface - SCSI adaptor  today with the ability to upgrade to a Fibre Channel SAN tomorrow.

"Storage Area Networks hold the promise of superior reliability, performance and storage management through the consolidation of resources. As the first and only true open architecture for tape libraries, ATL's Prism is the best way for tape libraries to take advantage of the SAN revolution in storage," said Shaun Walsh, director of SAN & NAS (1) See network access server.

(2) (Network Attached Storage) A specialized file server that connects to the network. A NAS device contains a slimmed-down operating system and a file system and processes only I/O requests by supporting the popular

"For immediate connectivity to the SAN, ATL's P1000 and P3000 series libraries featuring Prism Library Architecture adapt easily to embedded Fibre Channel interfaces, whether they are built at our factory or upgraded to Fibre Channel in the field. In the upcoming months, ATL will enable Prism-based libraries with vastly improved high availability features and other enhancements that will help our customers realize the promise of SAN."

New Product Specifications

For P1000/P3000 Series embedded solutions, the Fibre Channel interface is designed to connect to Fibre Channel loop or switched-fabric topologies. It supports standard multi-mode (short wave) optical fiber cabling, providing cable lengths up to 500 meters between the library and host computer (or a hub or switch).

When deployed with Fibre Channel, the P1000 and P3000 will connect directly to a Storage Area Network for high-performance backup of multiple servers simultaneously.

For P1000/P3000 Series libraries already deployed in the field, ATL provides its first Prism-based Fibre Channel bridge field upgrade kit. The solution is designed to be field installed within the P1000 or P3000 library and makes it possible to connect these libraries to a Fibre Channel network via multi-mode optical cabling.

This allows the P1000/P3000 library to be connected to a number of file or application servers to obtain backup speeds that can increase by as much as 10 times when compared to backup across a Fast Ethernet An earlier name for 100Mbps Ethernet. See 100Base-T.

For ATL legacy libraries, the Crossroads 4200 Fibre Channel Bridge connects two differential SCSI See SCSI.  busses to one Fibre Channel connection using multi-mode optical cabling. This capability is an excellent fit for customers with immediate needs for basic SAN connectivity of non-Prism ATL libraries.

About Prism-based Libraries

The P1000 Series is a cost-effective solution for departmental and midrange midrange Epidemiology The halfway point or midpoint in a set of observations; for most data, MR is calculated as the sum of the smallest observation and the largest observation, divided by 2; for age data, one is added to the numerator; a midrange is usually  storage requirements featuring up to 4 DLTtape drives and 30 cartridges for 72 gigabytes per hour performance and 1.05 terabytes of storage capacity.

It represents the industry's first library to utilize PCI expansion bus technology in support of user-installable fibre channel adapters and other advanced features such as Gigabit network adapters A printed circuit board that plugs into the bus of both user machines (clients) and servers in a local area network (LAN). Also commonly called a "network interface card" (NIC) or "LAN card," the network adapter transmits data onto the network and receives data from the network. , single-board computers and tape array controllers. The P1000 also features hot-swappable drives and user replaceable components to reduce potential service calls.

The P3000 Series is the industry's first DLTtape library with a High Availability (HA) design similar to HA servers and RAID systems. Targeted for enterprise-class applications, the P3000 features up to 16 DLTtape drives and 326 cartridges for 288 gigabytes per hour performance and 11.4 terabytes of storage capacity. Its HA design features single connector hot-swap DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  drives, power supplies and fans, as well as redundant power supplies, fans and AC sources.

The hot-swap components allow for non-disruptive maintenance, while the redundant AC components allow on-line replacement and continual uptime if a single component fails.
