IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 11, 1998--

ATL Products Inc. (Nasdaq: ATLPA), the leading supplier of automated DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  libraries for networked computers, Monday announced the "Fast-Ship Parts Program" with Federal Express Corp. (FedEx).

Targeted at system administrators who have experienced the unpredictability of spare parts Spare parts, also referred to as Service Parts is a term used to indicate extra parts available and in proximity to the mechanical item, such as a automobile, boat, engine, for which they might be used.

delivery, this innovative program utilizes FedEx's legendary service and nationwide distribution centers to provide predictably fast parts delivery. By expanding parts availability from a few targeted locations to depot centers in 50 cities across the country, ATL customers are assured closer and faster access to the parts they need, when they need them.

"We recently received a P1000 library that we had to convert to single-ended SCSI SCSI

It was headquartered in Mountain View, California. . "Within two hours of making the call to ATL, we had the parts that we needed. The experience was phenomenal! We lost no time at all with ATL's new Fast-Ship Parts Program."

This nationwide depot program also breaks ground in the area of spare parts warehousing. Traditionally, on-site warehousing is the fastest, but costliest method to access spare parts immediately, typically requiring large quantity purchases and resources to manage it. Since failure rates of ATL libraries are so low, coupled with the capabilities of the Fast-Ship Parts Program, it is no longer required that library customers stock spare parts on-site, which significantly reduces inventory expenses and total cost of ownership.

"Since our customers are not located uniformly across a specific region, the Fast-Ship Parts Program allows ATL the flexibility to match depot stocking levels accurately to the local spare parts needs of our customers," noted Carlos Valerio, vice president, ATL Customer Service.

"In an effort to raise the bar on customer service with the Fast-Ship Parts Program, ATL plans to expand depot spares support with FedEx to 50 additional cities in the U.S. with distribution services also planned for Canada, Europe, Asia and the Pacific Rim Pacific Rim, term used to describe the nations bordering the Pacific Ocean and the island countries situated in it. In the post–World War II era, the Pacific Rim has become an increasingly important and interconnected economic region. ."

With EDD centers strategically located within ATL's installation base, customers are assured to have the right part at the right time with service provided by the world's foremost express delivery company.

"In today's business-critical environments, customers rely on automated tape libraries to back-up their computer networks on a continuous basis and simply can't risk back-up delays of important data when, on those relatively few occasions, their replacement parts are not quickly accessible," said Chet Baffa, vice president Marketing & Sales for ATL Products.

"This innovative program is an essential element in satisfying customer demand for both high-end system availability and low total cost of ownership."

When a customer requires a replacement part, they call ATL Products' Customer Service Department who will validate the demand and dispatch the appropriate part request to FedEx's Customer Service Center. FedEx will then identify the nearest EDD and make arrangements to pick up the part and deliver it directly to the end-user that same day, usually within two to four hours.

In most cases, ATL will dispatch a field technician to conduct the necessary repairs and guarantee system reliability. ATL will replenish re·plen·ish
