ATL Products, a leading supplier of intelligent DLTtape(TM) libraries for networked computers, Thursday announced that Incomnet Communications Corp., a long-distance telecommunications provider located in Irvine, has selected ATL's P3000 Series DLTtape library to provide high data availability and secure backups for their entire enterprise.

Incomnet relies on a mix of UNIX, NT and Novell applications to support the majority of its business functions with critical applications that include Oracle and customized FoxPro databases, e-mail, Web site and accounting, all of which are backed up by their new enterprise-class P3000 library. Currently configured with six DLTtape drives and 326 cartridge slots, Incomnet's P3000 can be scaled to meet future demands allowing the company to add up to 10 more DLT7000 drives.

The reasons for implementing an enterprise backup solution at Incomnet are common to many companies with distributed systems such as simplifying, consolidating and centralizing complicated, labor-intensive backup services, reducing the strain on networks, lessening the impact that backup has on daily operations, improving data access and providing comprehensive backup capabilities.

Prior to implementing the P3000, Incomnet's system administrators were required to hand-swap tapes into stand-alone desktop drives which was labor-intensive and often took days to complete. This meant that data backed up at the beginning of the process could be outdated by the time the backup process was completed.

In addition, IS management was not confident that individual server-level backups were comprehensive, due to frequent hardware and software failures that may have put some data at risk. By centralizing and consolidating backup with an automated P3000 library system, Incomnet was able to eliminate tedious backup activities and reduce daily disruption to its users.

With a business that operates 24 hours per day, Incomnet requires that its data be accessible round the clock. The P3000's high availability (HA) design, hot-swap components and field-proven reliability were key to Incomnet's buying decision. The company is now able to perform daily incremental backups (up to 40% of the data is backed up online including the Oracle database) and weekly full backups within the allotted backup windows. Incomnet backups are now complete and comprehensive with critical data readily accessible.
