The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  partners as part of a broad industry initiative to develop the Tablet PC as an evolution of notebook computing, extending the value of the PC through the addition of rich pen & speech technologies.

"We're excited to be working with companies like ATI Technologies on the Tablet PC," said Alexandra Loeb, General Manager of the Tablet PC at Microsoft Corp. "Its expertise with notebook graphics will be a great complement to our vision of extending the value of today's notebook computer A laptop computer that weighs in a range from five to seven pounds. The term originated when laptops were routinely more than 10 pounds, and those that became lighter were placed in a special "notebook" category. In practice, notebook computer and laptop computer are synonymous.  by adding capabilities such as rich digital ink."

ATI's focus on enhancing the user's experience and developing enabling technologies for the portable computing market as it evolves has resulted in the development of TABLETVISION, a unique technology specifically available for a range of next generation Tablet PCs running the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Windows XP Tablet PC Edition is an edition of Windows XP intended for specially-designed notebook/laptop computers called tablet PCs. Windows XP Tablet PC Edition is compatible with a pen-sensitive screen, supporting handwritten notes and portrait-oriented screens.  operating system.

TABLETVISION will be available in Tablet PCs that use ATI's MOBILITY(TM) RADEON(TM) family of graphics processors, including MOBILITY(TM) RADEON(TM) and MOBILITY(TM) RADEON(TM) 7500. The MOBILITY RADEON family is optimized to run applications smoothly in portrait mode as well as the traditional landscape mode. TABLETVISION supports 90, 180 and 270-degree screen rotation.

ATI's MOBILITY RADEON family of graphics processors also feature ATI's ground-breaking POWERPLAY(TM) technology, which delivers extended battery life essential for the Tablet PC and other small-form factor computing devices. POWERPLAY lowers power consumption by modulating clock speeds and voltage settings automatically when users switch between AC (alternating current) and battery operation. POWERPLAY also includes the option of user-selectable voltage/frequency scaling, which allows for maximum-performance even when running off battery power.

"The MOBILITY RADEON family of processors is ideally suited to the Tablet PC. POWERPLAY and TABLETVISION provide the key system attributes that Tablet PC OEMs demand-longer battery life and flexible display support," said Phil Eisler, Vice President & General Manager, Mobile and Integrated Business Unit, ATI Technologies Inc.

ATI already has a proven track record developing graphics technology for tablet-style computing devices, including the Fujitsu Stylistic 3500. ATI will be demonstrating this technology at Comdex in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the week of November 12-16, 2001. ATI's booth is located on level one, Central Hall, L5946.
