) today announced that the FIRE GL(TM) X1-256 workstation graphics accelerator, featuring 256MB of DDR memory, dual DVI output, and an AGP Pro50 bus, is available on IA-32 based HP Workstations xw5000, xw6000 and xw8000.

Powered by ATI's revolutionary FGL(TM) 9700 Visual Processing Unit (VPU) with a 128-bit floating point rendering pipeline, four geometry engines and eight parallel pixel pipes, the FIRE GL X1-256 is designed to deliver the precision and performance demanded by CAD (computer-aided design), DCC (digital content creation The development of newsworthy, educational and entertainment material for distribution over the Internet or other electronic media. See DAMS. ) and other professional 3D applications.

"The fusion of HP's system architecture with ATI's leading workstation graphics technology should provide users with some of the most feature-rich platforms available," said Dinesh Sharma, Director of Workstation Products, ATI Technologies Inc. "The FIRE GL X1-256 offers robust power and an innovative architecture to artists, developers and engineers who want to create and refine digital content at unprecedented levels of versatility, quality and speed."

The FIRE GL X1-256 supports AGP 8X, and is designed to provide a two-way high-speed interface between the graphics subsystem and the workstation. This 2.1 GB/sec bandwidth is designed to empower professional users to work with larger datasets than ever before without sacrificing performance. In addition, a 256-bit graphics memory interface specified at a 19.8 GB/sec transfer rate, should enable multiple large textures to be rendered in real-time.

"HP's IA-32 based workstations with ATI's FIRE GL X1-256 accelerators are designed to provide the power, reliability and image quality required by professional users," said Jim Zafarana, Vice President and Worldwide Marketing Manager, HP Workstation Global Business Unit. "The inclusion of ATI's technology is consistent with HP's quality initiatives and is another milestone in our Leadership Graphics Program, which assists our workstation customers with advanced, tested and certified graphics solutions."

Complete driver support is available for Windows and Linux operating systems. Microsoft DirectX 9.0 support is currently scheduled to be available in May 2003.

The FIRE GL X1-256 features innovative ATI technologies including SMARTSHADER(TM) 2.0, which is designed to allow developers to create more complex visual effects and SMOOTHVISION(TM) 2.0, which should enhance image quality by removing jagged edges and bringing out fine texture detail. The FIRE GL X1-256 is intended to support full scene antialiasing See anti-aliasing.  with 6x oversampling Creating a more accurate digital representation of an analog signal. In order to work with real-world signals in the computer, analog signals are sampled some number of times per second (frequency) and converted into digital code.  for the highest level of visual quality.
