ATHOL TAX PREPARER PLEADS GUILTY TO TAX CHARGES
BOSTON, May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- An Athol, Mass., tax preparer

pleaded guilty today to an Indictment charging him with willfully aiding and assisting in the preparation of false federal income tax returns.
U.S. Attorney A. John Pappalardo announced today that Terry G. Akey, 148 Cottage St., Athol, Mass., pleaded guilty to the 30-count Indictment in a hearing before visiting United States District Judge Jose Antonio Fuste of the District of Puerto Rico. A prosecutor informed Judge Fuste that Akey prepared 30 individual and amended income tax returns on behalf of eight taxpayers. On each return, Akey improperly classified the taxpayers as independent labor contractors, although each was in fact an employee of a business or other entity. On each return he took deductions for numerous personal and non-deductible expenses, including groceries, vacations and cable television. Akey had a motive for claiming false deductions: the charges for his tax preparation services included 10 percent of any refund received by the taxpayers.
Judge Fuste scheduled sentencing for Aug. 3, 1992. Akey faces up to three years imprisonment, and a fine of $250,000, on each count of the Indictment.
The case was investigated by Special Agents of the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigation Division, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark W. Pearlstein of Pappalardo's Economic Crimes Division.
